Abigail McCarty
Abigail McCarty is a senior at Christopher Newport University pursuing a dual focus in Leadership Studies and Computational and Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Physics and Engineering. Passionate about the intersection of STEM and the humanities, she is dedicated to advancing education technology and fostering innovative learning environments. Abigail combines analytical rigor with strong leadership skills, demonstrating excellence in strategic planning, project management, and critical thinking. Her professional ethos is guided by a commitment to integrity, curiosity, and service, which she carries into every academic, professional, and volunteer endeavor.
Throughout her collegiate career, Abigail has cultivated a diverse portfolio of experiences. She has served as a Wason Scholar at the Wason Center for Civic Leadership, a Calculus Assistant, and a Center for Career Planning Summer Intern, among other roles. She has also contributed to research projects focused on improving mathematics education, demonstrating her ability to bridge leadership and technical expertise. Her work emphasizes collaboration, adaptability, and actionable insights, whether she is conducting surveys, mentoring students, or supporting community engagement initiatives.
Outside the classroom, Abigail is actively involved in her community and extracurricular activities, including serving on the Grafton High School Marching Band Staff, tutoring elementary students in mathematics, and speaking at TEDxCNU on leadership. What do you attribute your success to?
My community and support system. My husband, family, and friends. They all push me to be be my best and cheer me on as I work to get there.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to remain open to opportunities and to avoid saying no for people. Embracing new experiences and helping others whenever possible has allowed me to grow, learn, and build meaningful connections throughout my career.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is simple: talk to people. Make connections, ask for advice, and always keep learning.
