Amanda Mills is an accomplished Learning and Development Manager with over a decade of experience in the learning and development field, including the last four years specializing in the construction industry. Since March 2022, she has served as the Learning and Development Manager for Williams Plumbing, Heating, and Utilities, as well as Williams Civil Construction, where she oversees their trade school and apprenticeship programs. Amanda’s role focuses on creating robust training initiatives, cultivating skilled trades professionals, and managing programs that support career growth and workforce development in traditionally male-dominated industries.

Amanda’s professional journey began in education, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brandman University and working as an elementary school teacher. Her career evolved as she transitioned into adult career development, applying her instructional expertise to military healthcare training and, more recently, the construction trades. This unique path reflects her ability to adapt teaching methodologies to diverse learning environments and her commitment to helping individuals develop practical skills for long-term career success. Prior roles include serving as a Digital Curriculum Developer at Health Net Federal Services, where she designed and implemented digital learning programs that enhanced workforce effectiveness and engagement.

Passionate about expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups, Amanda has been a strong advocate for women in skilled trades, where only about five percent of the workforce is female. She actively promotes trades as viable and rewarding career options for all genders through initiatives with local high schools and community programs, including Manufacturing Day events that have engaged hundreds of middle school students. Her work combines leadership, educational expertise, and a dedication to workforce development, positioning her as a forward-thinking professional committed to bridging skill gaps and inspiring the next generation of trades professionals.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering this industry to embrace confidence, resilience, and a willingness to learn. Through my experience as a mentor, both professionally and volunteering with Girl Scouts, where I co-lead two troops of 10 to 14 year old girls, I have seen firsthand the impact of encouragement and guidance. I believe it is essential to support young women in pursuing careers in male dominated fields, helping them build skills, develop leadership, and recognize their potential to succeed and lead with integrity.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life center on integrity, dedication, and fostering growth in others. Professionally, I take pride in achievements such as implementing Montana’s largest non-union plumbing apprenticeship program, an initiative that required navigating the challenges of a male-dominated field, integrating a culture of learning, and managing diverse personalities. Throughout my career, I have relied on the guidance and mentorship of inspiring leaders, including Jenny Garrity, whose influence has been instrumental in shaping my approach to leadership and professional development.
