Kayla LaMonica is a dedicated librarian at the Beacon City School District with a strong background in early childhood education and a passion for supporting young learners. She is currently pursuing her Master of Library and Information Science at the University at Buffalo, building on her academic foundation from SUNY New Paltz, where she earned her Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education. With several years of experience as a substitute and student teacher across diverse educational settings, Kayla brings both adaptability and enthusiasm to her work in the library, fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

Outside of her professional role, Kayla is deeply committed to youth development and community engagement. She volunteers as a coach for Girls on the Run Upstate NY, mentoring girls aged 8–12 in confidence-building, teamwork, and goal-setting. She’s also a frequent chaperone for school field trips, always ready to support students’ growth beyond the classroom. In her downtime, Kayla enjoys crochet, cooking, and baking—creative outlets that reflect the same patience and care she brings to her work with children.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the values my parents instilled in me—both of them worked in law enforcement, and they always taught me that if your best is all you can give, then give it your best every single time.

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to recognize your limits and not be afraid to say no—especially when people are pulling you in many different directions.

My advice to young women entering this industry is to trust your judgment—every move you make is part of your growth, and it’s the right move for where you are in your journey.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in my field right now is learning to trust your own judgment, especially in a role that often requires quick thinking and independent decision-making.
