Dr. Krystie Herndon is a dedicated and highly accomplished academic advisor at Indiana University Bloomington, where she has served for nearly four decades. Currently holding the title of Academic Advisor-Expert in the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Herndon supports undergraduate students pursuing degrees across a diverse range of disciplines including Criminal Justice, Art History, Folklore and Ethnomusicology, English, Theatre and Drama, and more. Her deep commitment to student growth, academic exploration, and mentorship has earned her prestigious honors, such as the NACADA Outstanding Advising Award and the Terri Nation Outstanding Academic Advisor Award. A passionate advocate for the humanities, she is also an active contributor to campus-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing student engagement and retention.

Dr. Herndon holds a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education with a doctoral minor in Folklore from Indiana University, where she also earned her Master of Science in Higher Education. She brings multilingual capabilities in Spanish and American Sign Language, and enjoys public speaking, singing, and theatrical performance. Outside the university, she remains actively involved in her faith community and local organizations, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to service and education. Her advising philosophy is rooted in helping students find not just success—but also joy and meaning—in their academic journeys.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the unwavering support and inspiration of my 6th grade teacher, who believed in me early on and continues to be a friend—I even invited her to my law school graduation, and she showed up.

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never give up and to keep learning no matter where you are in your journey.
