Lady Franciscar Nicolas-Kassama, AICP, is a seasoned urban and regional planner with over a decade of experience in public service, planning, and community development. She currently serves as a Planner III for the City of Huntsville, Alabama, where she contributes to shaping the city’s growth through thoughtful and data-driven urban planning initiatives. Her work integrates strategic research, GIS applications, and policy planning to ensure Huntsville continues to thrive as one of the most dynamic and forward-looking cities in the Southeast.

In addition to her professional role with the City of Huntsville, Lady Franciscar is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Community and Regional Planning at Alabama A&M University, where she mentors the next generation of planners and urban development professionals. Her academic background includes a Master’s degree in City/Urban, Community and Regional Planning from both Alabama A&M University and the University of the Philippines, reflecting her global perspective and deep commitment to inclusive, sustainable community development.

Beyond her professional and academic achievements, Lady Franciscar is also a certified member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and American Planning Association. Her leadership, research, and community outreach—such as her efforts during National Community Planning Month—demonstrate her passion for empowering communities through education, engagement, and equitable development. What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my motivation and commitment to continuous learning. I believe in always expanding my knowledge and skills to stay effective and adaptable in my work. As an experienced planner with a strong background in government and administration, I’m passionate about creating organized, efficient systems that drive meaningful results. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, walking, and dancing, which keep me balanced and inspired.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never stop learning and keep moving forward no matter the challenges. This mindset has taught me perseverance, resilience, and the importance of continuous progress in both my personal and professional life.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. Stay curious, seek out mentors, and share your knowledge generously with others. Above all, treat everyone with respect—collaboration and mutual support are key to long-term success.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in my field right now is reaching as many people as possible to make a meaningful impact. Every interaction is a chance to help someone, improve a process, or create positive change. I’m driven by the goal of making a difference each day, no matter how big or small.

The values most important to me—both in my work and personal life—are authenticity and purpose.
