Lauren Buchanan, M.A., is a dynamic workforce development leader and former journalist dedicated to building stronger communities through talent and opportunity. Currently serving as Workforce Development Manager at the Van Wert Area Economic Development Corporation, Lauren leverages her extensive background in media and strategic communications to connect individuals with meaningful employment, support local businesses, and create pathways between education and industry. Her work reflects a commitment not only to metrics but to fostering genuine relationships that strengthen her community.

Before transitioning into workforce development, Lauren built a nearly decade-long career in journalism and communications, holding roles such as Managing Editor at MJH Life Sciences and Communications Specialist at Do it Best Corp. She brings expertise in editorial management, content development, and team leadership across digital, print, and social platforms. Lauren has also shared her knowledge as an adjunct faculty member at Indiana Institute of Technology, teaching journalism and strategic communication while mentoring the next generation of media professionals.

Outside of her professional work, Lauren is deeply invested in her community, serving as a 4-H advisor and volunteering locally. She enjoys gardening and spending time with her five beloved wiener dogs. Lauren earned her M.A. in Media Management and B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from Kent State University, where she was recognized for leadership, international storytelling, and excellence in student media. Her career is marked by a dedication to meaningful work, lifelong learning, and helping communities thrive.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong work ethic and a willingness to embrace new challenges without fear. I believe that consistently putting in effort and approaching unfamiliar situations with curiosity and determination has been key to my growth and achievements.

My advice to young women entering this industry is to confidently share your ideas and perspectives. Don’t let the fear of rejection hold you back—your voice and contributions are valuable, and speaking up is essential for growth and impact.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is how difficult it can be to get started, especially when navigating a competitive landscape. At the same time, the constant changes in technology present both challenges and opportunities—staying adaptable and continuously learning is essential to thrive and leverage these advancements effectively.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value to me in both my work and personal life is maintaining balance—working to live, not living to work. I believe in giving my best while also prioritizing time for personal growth, relationships, and well-being.
