Leah Nelson is a senior paralegal at Kearney, McWilliams & Davis, PLLC, where she supports attorneys across oil and gas, business, and litigation matters. Based in the firm’s Denver office, she has been with the firm since 2017 and has built a reputation for her precision, organizational skills, and ability to manage complex projects efficiently. She was promoted to senior paralegal in 2022 and now plays a key role in both client work and mentoring junior staff.

Her expertise is especially concentrated in the energy sector, where she assists examining attorneys with Drilling and Division Order Title Opinions. Leah drafts unreleased Deeds of Trust, Oil and Gas Leases, Rights of Way, and Easements, while also editing and formatting Title Opinions to meet strict accuracy and compliance standards. In addition, she develops templates and manuals that streamline internal processes and improve productivity across the firm.

Leah’s career began as a legal assistant at Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC, where she handled post-judgment filings and administrative processes. She also completed a legal internship at the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office in Kansas City, Missouri, where she conducted case law research, analyzed statutes, and observed courtroom proceedings. These early experiences provided her with a strong foundation in legal research, case preparation, and procedural law, which she has carried into her paralegal career.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Corrections from Rockhurst University, where she also obtained her Paralegal Certificate. With over eight years of experience in the legal field, Leah is valued for her attention to detail, collaborative approach, and dedication to client service. Today, she continues to make meaningful contributions to Kearney, McWilliams & Davis, PLLC through her technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my mentor, Ashley Glassman, the incredible people I work with, and staying true to myself in the workplace. One of my biggest achievements is earning the trust of my company because I consistently get things done that others don’t.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to always ask questions and know your value. I’ve also learned the importance of taking feedback and using it to continue to grow.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advice I give to young women entering the industry is simple: don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re confused. Curiosity and clarity open doors to growth and confidence.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my career is continuing to grow professionally while navigating health issues.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Outside of work, I value balance and joy—whether it’s hiking, savoring a great cup of coffee outside in Colorado, playing tennis or golf, or spending time with my nephews.
