Her Interview

Ten minutes with Deborah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a lifelong commitment to reading, learning, and thoughtful reflection—these practices are not just habits, but central to who I am. Continuously expanding my knowledge and perspective has shaped both my personal growth and professional development.

I also consider my ability to help others clearly articulate their stories to be one of my core strengths. Supporting individuals in finding and expressing their voice has been deeply rewarding and instrumental in my career.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in my field include the invisible burdens on family caregivers, economic pressures that limit support, and multi-generational care needs affecting students and workers. The shift to online teaching post-COVID has also reduced the immediacy and emotional richness of in-person classes, presenting opportunities to innovate and foster engagement in new ways.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values I hold most important in both my work and personal life are lifelong learning, intellectual curiosity, authenticity, and a committed advocacy for caregivers and those whose stories often go unheard.
