In November 2005, I got sober. Just a few months later, in March 2006, I began my career with Starbucks—and in many ways, that was the beginning of the professional life I would go on to build. This photo was taken early in that journey, after I organized a black-tie event benefiting Pink Tie Friends, an organization supporting women going through breast cancer. Looking back, this moment represents something much bigger than an event or an award. It was when I began to understand the kind of leader I wanted to become and the difference I wanted my career to make. I learned that a career could be more than a job—it could be a vehicle for helping people. Nearly two decades later, that same belief is at the heart of how I lead and why I created Nature Talks Back™: the product may be the vehicle, but the mission is always bigger.

Some milestone moments are especially meaningful because of the people who helped us reach them. In April 2026, I had the honor of presenting Senator Steve Padilla with CalCCA’s CCA Champion Award. Steve was a mentor to me during his service on the San Diego Community Power Board, making this opportunity to recognize him particularly special—a moment to celebrate his leadership and express my gratitude for the guidance he shared along the way.
