Her Interview
Ten minutes with Rowena
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success is rooted in resilience, mentorship, and a clear sense of purpose. Life’s challenges have shaped my path, but my greatest motivation is being a role model for my son, who inspires me every day to keep moving forward. Along the way, strong female mentors have uplifted, inspired, and guided me. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance—proof that with determination and purpose, challenges can be overcome and success is possible.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received came from mentors who reminded me to never lose sight of my worth or the strength of my abilities. Their words were simple but powerful: believe in who you are, what you have already accomplished, and what you’re capable of. That guidance has stayed with me, giving me the courage to face challenges, seize opportunities, and keep moving forward with confidence.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I can give young women entering my industry is to stay grounded in your purpose and believe in your potential. Mentorship from strong female leaders shaped my journey, reminding me of my worth and what I’m capable of achieving. In difficult moments, take time to reflect, recognize your accomplishments—no matter how small—and reconnect with your “why.” When you lead with purpose and confidence, others will see it too, and it will open the door to opportunities and success.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is sustaining meaningful support for women in STEM while also expanding access to preventative care in underserved communities. Despite progress, barriers to mentorship, representation, and resources still exist, making it critical to continue creating pathways that empower more women to enter, grow, and lead in scientific and healthcare careers. At the same time, many communities still face limited access to early screening, diagnostics, and preventative services—areas that are essential for improving long-term health outcomes and reducing disparities in care.
Amid these challenges, there are also incredibly exciting opportunities emerging. Significant investments in artificial intelligence are beginning to reshape the landscape of healthcare and biomedical research. AI has the potential to analyze vast clinical, genomic, and molecular datasets at a scale that was previously impossible, uncovering patterns that can improve diagnostics, accelerate innovative drug therapies, and enable more personalized treatment strategies. When applied thoughtfully and responsibly, these technologies can help clinicians make faster, more informed decisions and ultimately improve patient outcomes. The true opportunity lies in ensuring that these advancements not only drive innovation, but also expand access to better care for all communities.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my work and my life are conviction, mentorship, and a deep commitment to personal well-being. Throughout my journey, I have faced challenges that tested my limits, but they also strengthened my determination to move forward with clarity and purpose. I believe that protecting and prioritizing our health—both physical and mental—is not a weakness, but a powerful act of self-respect that allows us to continue showing up, growing, and making an impact.
Mentorship has been a defining force in my path. The encouragement and belief of strong leaders helped me recognize my own potential and trust in my voice. That experience instilled in me a responsibility to do the same for others—to uplift, guide, and create space for the younger generation to thrive.
I am also deeply committed to community service and advancing women’s health, because I believe meaningful change happens when we invest in ourselves and in one another. Conviction has taught me that obstacles do not define us—our willingness to rise, adapt, and keep moving forward does. It is that belief that continues to guide how I lead, how I grow, and how I strive to make a lasting difference.
