Her Story

About Aaliyah

I am currently an HR recruiter at FPL Food, a slaughterhouse. I've been with them for 2 years, starting as an administrative assistant over half the plant before getting promoted into HR. I put in for the promotion while pursuing my associate's degree in financial accounting, aiming for payroll, and now I'm working on my bachelor's in forensic accounting with a concentration in fraud detection and auditing. My previous experience includes being an operations manager at FedEx Grounds before taking a break to have my daughter. In my role, I focus on recruiting and talent acquisition, handle all training for the site, and collaborate with the safety manager to promote safety and morale among employees.

Ten minutes with Aaliyah

01What do you attribute your success to?

Treating others how I want to be treated, regardless of their position, and being unbiased. Treating everybody the same across the board with respect has brought me a lot of success because people make my job easier and want to stay when they see politeness and respect.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Keep pushing and don't stop. Just because things look like they're not geared to be in my favor at the moment doesn't mean that that won't change later on down the line. Keep doing what I know to be right, and be true to myself, and everything will fall into place.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just don't stop trying, and keep working toward your goal. Don't quit, don't be discouraged. In this role, it is very easy to get discouraged, but just not getting discouraged because you know that you're trying your hardest and doing what you're supposed to be doing.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The economy is really bad right now so a lot of people need jobs but the quality of people coming in is not so good. Wages are not livable for many, leading to high turnover. It's hard to keep people because once sent to production, supervision and environment differ and I can't control that.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Loyalty and honesty. I am very family-oriented in my personal life and value family above all. At work, I appreciate loyalty from those I bring in, wanting them to have conversations rather than just leaving, and I value honesty in both personal and work life.
