Her Story

About Aayushi

Aayushi Goyal serves as accounting team manager at Idemitsu, a Japanese oil and gas company with headquarters in Japan, in Houston, Texas. With approximately five years of experience in the oil and gas industry in accounting and finance, she joined after an opportunity at Targa Resources opened up and later took the risk of moving to Idemitsu. Goyal earned her undergraduate degree in accounting and MBA in India before moving to the United States, where she pursued and completed her CPA certification, clearing all exams in her first attempt within a 12-month target. In her current role, she manages an accounting team while prioritizing relationships, adding value beyond transactions, and addressing day-to-day challenges such as cultural differences with colleagues from various backgrounds and reporting under IFRS standards rather than U.S. GAAP. She draws on career advice about the importance of taking risks to grow, arriving early as being on time means already being 15 minutes late, and creating value every day in both professional and personal life.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Aayushi

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Right before I left Targa, during staff training, a leader close to me said taking risk is important for you to grow in your career. It was hard to leave my comfort zone but I took the risk and am glad I did. Another piece was about time: if you are reaching a place on time, that means you're already 15 minutes late. My personal mentor advised creating value every day where you are, looking for opportunities to add value in professional and personal life.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

In accounting, it is a collaborative effort; one person cannot do everything. Be ready to take the risk. If you love it, it's exciting, every day there is something to learn and it will not let you get bored. It's not all just about numbers, there's a lot more outside of numbers too. Give it a try; it's a profession that at once I thought not to pursue, and then I came back and chose this career, and I love it.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One challenge is working at Idemitsu, a Japanese company with headquarters in Japan, so different culture than American companies, working with folks from different cultures and backgrounds. They report IFRS which is different from U.S. GAAP. The footprint is still small. Day-to-day challenges come with opportunity to improvise processes, writing policies, creating processes.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Accountability, whether personal or professional. Being on time. I have been an outperformer because of these two values. Being accountable and able to deliver on time or be on time, not making other people wait. Creating value every day.
