Her Story

About Abby

I had a pretty interesting journey to where I am today. I was originally supposed to go to CU Boulder for Leeds, but I ended up getting into UCSD off the waitlist for data science, which is a very competitive major. I planned on coming in to do data analytics for a business program, but I quickly realized that I'd be better off in the business economics realm. I also considered transferring to schools like SDSU Fowler and other schools that are pretty strong in the business industry, but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at because our school is ranked number 3 according to some sources, or number 6 according to U.S. News. It's a pretty strong program here, and I plan to do something in the finance field, or accounting, or even user experience with data analysis if possible. I've been passionate in the field of business since my junior year of high school, where I worked for the Future Business Leaders of America Club. Currently, I'm a technical intern for Triton Trading Group Finance Club on campus. We're actually the fastest growing club currently and we won an award for it. I'm technically an intern because we are doing wealth and asset management for local San Diego companies at this moment. I'm also the events planner at Social Media Production Lab, which is a new club on campus, and I'm a member of Alpha Phi sorority.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Abby

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to not just my personal network, but my support system. Specifically, I would attribute a lot of it to my mom. She's so incredibly hardworking and she's an immigrant, which makes me a first gen. My friends and my family have all done so much to help me get to where I've gotten, even just graduating high school, and supporting me through all the mental roadblocks. Honestly, I wouldn't be here without any of that. And also, my personal connection in Los Angeles - I would definitely give a big tribute to him because he's been here for me through it all, and now he's trying to set me up with a good opportunity.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The biggest advice I've received is to always stay humble, keep your head down and work, and keep your circle pretty small, especially the inner circle. It's always important to not just boast about accomplishments, but actually put your head down and do the work that needs to get you where you are. Because no matter where you are in life, it's always important to keep getting bigger and keep growing and get stronger, and it's important to have those special people that are actually rooting for you instead of people who see opportunities and try to take advantage of that.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

My biggest challenge right now is probably just time commitments, as I'm a pretty busy person at the very moment. I'm dealing with a lot of finals and other commitments that I'm trying to keep up with, and that's honestly why it was hard for me to schedule the call. I'm so sorry about that. I had such a busy time in my life. But in terms of opportunities, I don't see that being a long-term challenge that's going to always take up my time, as I'm about to finish my first year and be able to dedicate time to fields that I'm really passionate for, so I'm very thankful for that.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I think loyalty is extremely important to me. I always tell my friends, especially the ones that I'm about to start working with this summer, that it's important to remember you are forever, and to actually ride for your friends and family that are supporting you. And never to let your ego get too big to where - another value I would say is humility, or just being humble in general. That's a very important value in my opinion. Everyone can want a piece of whatever opportunity you have to offer, but it's always just important to keep it humble and just do work. And I guess another value that I hold strongly is friendship, because of all of these things. But in the workplace, the strongest value to me is probably loyalty and honesty.
