Her Story

About Abira

I started my career in architecture and facilities management as an intern with the facilities department at my university, working from the end of May to the end of July for about two and a half months. From there, I was recruited by Chief Solutions and started in mid-August, where I've now been working for about seven to eight months as an architectural design and construction coordinator. I work part-time because I'm still a full-time college student in my fourth year of a five-year bachelor's program in architecture. My responsibilities include managing the university floor plans, providing PDFs to anyone who needs plans for upcoming projects, making flyers for the university, and creating floor plans. I'm currently working on a really cool project where we're creating a 3D canvas map that will allow people to navigate throughout the university digitally. For a while, up until about two to three weeks ago, I was the only employee working on these tasks like making floor plans and 3D models, but now I've gotten help. One of my biggest challenges has been managing my time and making sure I prioritize my classes, often having to work weekends for my job so I can keep up with my classes during the week. This summer, I'm taking a hiatus from this job to intern with an architecture firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I'll be doing similar work but in more of a creative design role. I'm interested in working in civic, medical, and sports facilities, designing government buildings, hospitals, and sports facilities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Abira

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My supervisor Taja Ingram would always encourage us to be visionaries. Every day of my internship over the summer, she would ask us to do some type of philosophical icebreaker, and we would have to list our goals for the week. She always encouraged us to be visionaries, and I really appreciated her for that. She's one of the few women that I look up to because she just always has everything together, or at least that's what it seems like to me, and I just appreciate how much of a boss she is.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

My biggest challenge has been managing my time and making sure I prioritize my classes. For a while, up until maybe two to three weeks ago, I was the only employee working on things like making the floor plans and making 3D models, but now I've gotten help, so that's going to make things a little bit easier. I haven't struggled with keeping up with my workflow for my job, but a lot of times I end up having to work weekends for my job so that I can keep up with my classes during the week. It's one of those things that you gotta learn by doing, so I had to learn the hard way. My biggest opportunity has been the internship that I'm about to do this summer. I'm going to take a hiatus from this job and intern with an architecture firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I'll be doing similar work but more of a creative design role.
