Her Interview

Ten minutes with Acacia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think just hard work, and being really diligent, and knowing that even though I wanted to continue to move forward in my career when I was younger and just starting out, knowing that it wasn't going to happen immediately, and continuing to work towards that next goal as a motivator.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My mentor through the NACM program often says to be like a goldfish, have a three-second memory, forget it, move on, keep going. I think about that all the time.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The work is difficult, but the benefits are rewarding. When you get to see someone come in who is excited because they completed a term of their judgment, or they're coming back in because they're getting custody back of their kids, that is rewarding. We see people on the worst day of their lives, not the best day.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Some of the biggest challenges we face in our field right now are inadequate staffing. A lot of courts across the country are also facing this, and then we're also all facing issues with workflow management, and then additionally with public trust, because if you don't have public trust in the judiciary, how are you expected to be able to hand down the sentences and to help people in the way that you need to if there isn't public trust?
