About Ada
Ada Montague serves as Senior Staff Attorney at the Native American Rights Fund in Boulder, Colorado. She has been in this role for approximately five years. Prior to joining the Native American Rights Fund, she worked for the state government in Montana at the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation and earlier in private practice at a boutique law firm focused on water rights adjudication. Montague has practiced water law and land-related law for about 13 years. Before attending law school, she worked as a land use planner. She continues to refine her water law practice while maintaining expertise in land use law, all viewed through the lens of federal Indian law. Her typical responsibilities include research, drafting, issue spotting, litigation, client interaction, meetings, blog content generation, and reviewing colleagues' work. A notable professional achievement was contributing to an amicus brief for the Supreme Court case Arizona v. Navajo in 2022 through the organization's Supreme Court project. Montague earned her JD and a Master's of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana School of Law in 2013. She is a member of the Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the Boulder Bar Association, and the Colorado Indian Bar Association. In 2014, she received the Pro Bono Publico Award from the 1st Judicial District Bar in Helena, Montana. She has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters over the years.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I've been incredibly lucky through the mentorship that I've been given over the years. And am indebted to all the people that have either been my boss or have helped me achieve the goals of whatever job I was in. Given their advice, and their time and their interest in me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Part of being a professional is owning your time, and knowing where to invest your time.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The creativity you bring to your work is boundless, and never be afraid to push back on anything that limits that creativity.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges in practicing law right now is the politicization of the judiciary.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Working to bend the arc of justice in the direction of those who need it most.
