Her Story
About Adriana
I have always loved media, and I was Director of Public Affairs for many years for different radio stations. That gave me an insight to work in the community and for the community, and that's what led me to go to the nonprofit space where I've been for 4 years now. My key responsibilities include overseeing the adult programs such as the ESL job training, the Pathways job training program, and resume building. I also oversee the grocery store program, which is actually our pantry, but we call it a grocery store because it's a customer's choice. They get to come and shop just like if it was a grocery store with a shopping cart, and that gives a dignified experience to everybody that comes into our doors. We call everybody neighbor, as we are together in the same community. My main area of expertise is community engagement, being able to connect the public with resources, information, education, and empowerment to the community as a whole. I have a specialization within the Hispanic community to be able to use my Spanish background, not only with the language, but also with the lingo and the different traditions and culture.

Ten minutes with Adriana
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would attribute my success to God. To begin with, because I know he has a plan for my life. And I've seen it. And I've seen that he's shaped every road and the path that he's had. Not only when I started in media, how he connected me to the public affairs, then how he connected me with higher education, and how I continue to grow every day, to be able to serve the community, and to be his hands and feet.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I will say, look inside of you and find everything that you can when it comes to your skills, because all of us have skills, but we have to develop them, so that will be the first place to do. Second, continue to get educated. As much education that you can receive from doing, like, having a degree or having a career, go ahead and do that, don't be scared, and look for scholarships. There's so many scholarships out there that you can apply for, and don't be in debt, because a lot of people are in debt nowadays, and it becomes a rock on their way to continue to advance.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think one of the biggest challenges is to be able to exist when funding comes low, to be able to stretch the funds as much as you can to continue to have the mission. And then also, one of the biggest opportunities is to be able to have excellent customer service. I love to tour different facilities, not only nonprofit facilities, but any community center, government buildings, places that serve the public, and I love to see how they operate in customer service and that type of thing, to always be able to give the best customer service experience, knowing that when people reach out for help, it's very hard for someone to do. And once they're there, they're ashamed, and I want to be able to bring an experience where it's dignified, and it's excellent. So, I think that is a great opportunity that not only myself or where I work, but anyone in my field can take part to be able to have great customer service and excellent customer service to bring dignity to all the community.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I think they're all entangled, they're all together. So I will say that the biggest value for me is to be Christ-centered. And then the second will be to be excellent at everything that I do, and to be family-oriented. I think those three are gonna be so together, because we can give ourselves to our career and give everything there, and forget about home, but I think if you can be able to put everything together, knowing that even the people in my house, my husband, my son, even if they don't work in the same field I work, but we were one. And when I share with them, they can be able to be part of that work that I do. In fact, right now, as we're talking, my son is volunteering at the soccer camp, right here with Brother Bill's, and he can be able to collaborate with the work that I already do. I think being Christ-centered, having excellence in your work, and then also be family-oriented, I think those three needs to be there to be able to reach fully success in all areas.
