About Adrienne

Adrienne Ricks is the Supervising Deputy Clerk for the General District Courts of Virginia, Criminal/Traffic Division, based in Portsmouth, Virginia. She started as a part-time employee in August 2019. She was hired as a full-time Deputy Clerk in the Criminal Division in November 2019. She ascended to the supervisor role in September 2025. In this capacity, she oversees a range of court operations, including generating and processing subpoenas, handling protective orders, issuing certified case documentation, conducting out-of-custody arraignments, coordinating jail transfers for hearings and trials, and providing direct customer service to the public. Her work requires close collaboration with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and defense counsel, as well as meticulous attention to court records and filing systems. Before entering the criminal justice field, Ricks spent more than two decades building a career in insurance and risk management. She worked as a Bodily Injury Adjuster for USAA, investigating automobile claims and negotiating settlements, and prior to that spent over eleven years at Cox Communications as a Risk Management Specialist, where she eventually served as Interim Risk Manager and earned her Senior Claims Law Associate (Gold) designation. During this period, she also became active in the Hampton Roads Claims Association, serving as its Vice President in 2013 and President in 2014. Her academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with a concentration in Psychology from Virginia Wesleyan University, earned in 2002 while working full-time and raising her son as a single mother, followed later by a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration from ECPI University. Driven by a deep commitment to equal justice, fair treatment, and the protection of individual rights, Ricks transitioned into public service once her children were grown, choosing to pursue work that aligned more closely with her personal values. She credits her faith and the steady support of her family as the cornerstones of her achievements, and she encourages young women entering any field to follow their own convictions rather than the expectations of others. Her career reflects a rare blend of disciplined professional expertise and genuine personal purpose, spanning both the private insurance sector and the public criminal justice system.

In 2026, she became a published author of the book "Putting the Pieces Together" which is a collection of fictional short stories applying Bible Principles to modern day scenarios.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Adrienne

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith and to the unwavering support of my husband and family, which together form the foundation of everything I've accomplished. Once our children were grown, I made the decision to pursue the career I truly love, and that leap of faith has shaped the path I'm on today.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to follow what's in your heart rather than what others expect of you. When you listen to your own convictions and let them guide your decisions, success will follow every time.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Equal justice, fair treatment, and the preservation of rights are the values that motivate me most, both in how I approach my work and in how I engage with the people I serve.
