Her Interview

Ten minutes with Afroza

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, faith, and a strong sense of purpose in my work. I strive to be a role model for underprivileged Muslim women and to show that we can rise, succeed, and lead with integrity. Staying committed through challenges and continuing to move forward, even when the path is difficult, has been central to my journey.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to pursue my dreams and never give up, even when the journey is tough. I have learned that persistence and dedication will eventually open doors, and that loving what you do helps you sustain yourself through challenges and avoid burnout.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering clinical laboratory science is to lead with empathy and compassion. This field needs strong, caring professionals who can balance technical precision with human understanding. I also encourage women to seek supportive environments, consider flexible work arrangements when needed, and continue advancing through certifications and training to expand their career opportunities.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is how competitive CLS programs and internships have become, especially in California. The career pathway can also feel limited compared to other healthcare professions like nursing. However, there are strong opportunities for growth through additional certifications, leadership development, and specialization in areas like blood banking and laboratory management.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values to me are simplicity, honesty, empathy, and kindness. I also believe strongly in maintaining balance by separating work stress from personal life. I encourage others to stay present, take care of themselves, and approach both life and work with clarity, calmness, and integrity.
