Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ahsha

01What do you attribute your success to?

My dad inspired me because he worked in pharmaceuticals as Community Relations Manager for Bristol-Myers Squibb. I loved the medical field from growing up seeing his work functions and how much he loved his job. I wanted a career in medical where I could speak with patients, be around people, and be a leader like him.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Just keep going. Even when you don't think you can, or even when you think the goal is unattainable, if you want it, just keep going. You'll get there.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's not as scary as it seems. When you first walk into your first optical job, and you start doing the trainings, and seeing the sales associates, checking people out, and reading prescriptions, you're like, what? Am I ever gonna get this? You will. Just give yourself time and grace.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges: Clientele expectations have changed with more 'I want what I want when I want it' attitudes and adapting to new technology like screen time affecting prescriptions. Opportunities: Strong internal promotion programs like the area manager program allowing up to 2 years experience then potential regional roles, with flexibility to stay as GM or advance.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Recognize that most of our awake time is at work so employees become family. Treat staff the way I would treat my own family, creating an enjoyable work environment.
