Her Story

About Aida

Aida Baez, PE, is a Partner and Senior Structural Engineer at ACcord Engineering, where she plays a key leadership role in the planning, design, and execution of complex structural engineering projects. She is responsible for guiding multidisciplinary teams, overseeing technical deliverables, and ensuring that each project meets the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and design integrity. Her work spans a broad range of commercial, institutional, and infrastructure developments, where she is recognized for her ability to align technical excellence with practical, buildable solutions. From an early age, Aida developed a deep fascination with engineering after watching a television series featuring an engineer confidently interpreting plans on construction sites and helping shape buildings as they rose. That image became a defining inspiration, leading her to envision her future in the field. Naturally inclined toward math and science, she quickly connected her strengths with her interests and became increasingly driven to pursue engineering. She requested a drafting table as a child and began creating her own designs, later strengthening her technical foundation through drafting coursework at an early age. By the time she entered college, her career path was already firmly established, shaped by years of focused curiosity and early hands-on exploration. Over the years, she has become known for her discipline, resilience, and unwavering commitment to quality, self motivation to deliver solutions that exceed expectations. In 2021, she co-founded her own engineering firm, which achieved recognition as AIA Palm Beach 2024 Consulting Firm of the Year within its first few years, an achievement that underscored both the strength of her leadership and the impact of her work. Throughout her career, she has built a reputation for persistence, technical rigor, and professional pride, consistently striving to elevate engineering standards and deliver meaningful value through every project.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Aida

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my work ethic, perseverance, and drive. Throughout my career, I’ve built a reputation for pushing myself to deliver the highest level of value possible and never giving up until the job is done right. I take great pride in my work and constantly challenge myself to raise the standard and improve with every project.

I’m deeply passionate about what I do, and that passion developed early in my career into a true commitment to excellence. My path has not always been straightforward, and I’ve faced both personal and professional challenges along the way. But my determination and resilience have always carried me forward. That drive, to keep improving, stay the course, and contribute meaningfully both professionally and personally, has been one of my greatest strengths and the foundation of my success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received came from the mentors I worked with early in my engineering career. They taught me that technical knowledge alone is not enough—you must be disciplined, thorough, and accountable for every detail of your work.

They emphasized the importance of understanding not only engineering design, but also the business side of the profession and the broader impact of our work. I learned that as engineers, our responsibility extends beyond calculations and analysis. We must produce clear, coordinated, and constructible documents that contractors can confidently build from, because the success of a project depends on effective communication as much as sound design.

That mindset of discipline, attention to detail, and ownership has stayed with me throughout my career. It became the foundation of my professional growth and has guided me in every project, leadership role, and business decision since.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

One piece of advice I would give young women entering this industry is to never let anyone else define your path for you. Throughout my career, I’ve encountered people who tried to tell me what I should do, what I was capable of, or what direction I should take. I learned early on that it’s important to trust your own instincts, stay confident in your abilities, and pursue the path that truly aligns with your goals and passions.

As a woman in engineering, I’ve also experienced moments where I was underestimated or judged differently. Those experiences only strengthened my determination to prove myself through hard work, knowledge, and perseverance. My advice is to stay focused, remain resilient, and never allow someone else’s limitations or opinions to dictate your future. It’s okay to evolve, change direction, and grow throughout your career, as long as those decisions are yours. Stay true to yourself, believe in your abilities, and don’t be afraid to take up space in this industry.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges facing the engineering and construction industry today is the shortage of highly motivated and well-trained talent. I hear the same concern not only from engineers, but also from architects and contractors across the industry. There are people entering the workforce, but fewer who are truly willing to invest the time, discipline, and effort required to excel in this profession. Technical fields like engineering demand commitment, critical thinking, and a strong work ethic, and those qualities are becoming harder to find.

I’ve observed this trend for many years, even before becoming a business owner, but it has become increasingly evident across the industry. Fewer young people are pursuing engineering and other technical careers, in part because higher education has become more expensive and there is growing skepticism about the value of a college education. While I understand that college is not the right path for everyone, and that many important careers do not require a degree, professions like engineering do require a strong educational foundation and technical training.

I believe one of the greatest opportunities we have as an industry is to inspire and encourage the next generation to pursue careers in engineering, construction, and other skilled professions that help build and strengthen our communities. We need to continue emphasizing the value of education, mentorship, discipline, and long-term growth. Investing in people and developing future talent will be critical not only for our industry, but for society as a whole.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In my professional life, the value that matters most to me is work ethic. Throughout my career, I’ve built my reputation on pushing myself to deliver the highest level of value possible and never settling for less than my best. I take great pride in my work and constantly challenge myself to improve, raise standards, and deliver results that truly make a difference. To me, success is not about working endlessly—it’s about being disciplined, committed, and intentional in the effort you give every day.

In my personal life, I value integrity, perseverance, and purpose. I strive to be the best person I can be for my family, my community, and the people around me. I believe in staying grounded, remaining true to myself, and consistently doing the right thing, even when life presents challenges. I’m driven by the desire to continue growing, contributing positively to society, and living in a way that reflects both humility and authenticity.
