Her Story

About Aida

I started my teaching career when I was 22 with the goal of coaching high school sports. Teaching was just something I thought I had to do to coach, but after 3 years, my loved switched and I fell in love with teaching. I stopped coaching altogether and became deeply engulfed in the teaching part, earning Teacher of the Year recognition, receiving grants, and having my writing published online. I took leadership roles wherever I was and even taught out of state before transitioning to administration. As an Assistant Principal, I serve as the special populations administrator, overseeing special education meetings, serving as the contact person for new students from other countries, managing all campus social media and parent communication, supporting teachers in the classroom, and addressing parent and teacher concerns. I'm starting my doctorate in the fall with the goal of becoming a principal or working in leadership around special education and less represented populations, including English language learners. I'm the first in my family to earn a college degree and currently hold 3 degrees. My proudest moment is discovering that my great-great-grandfather was a professor who wrote a book, and realizing I'm following in his legacy two generations later.

Ten minutes with Aida

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say it's a hard career. It doesn't get easier, but it gets better every year. You have to remember why you're doing it, and you have to remain very focused and not let outside people or stimulus affect what you're doing. You can't control everything, so you can control what you can control. At times, you kind of have to have tunnel vision to reach your goals in the education field and get where you want to go.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I try to be a positive person and empathetic. I'm really, really strong in belief and action and inclusivity of everybody. I like to think that I'm pretty creative, and wherever I go, I like to think that I bring a good, positive culture to the environment.
