Founder & CEO, University Hotels & Club™ | Founder & CEO, A.F. Canta LLC

Aileen Filomena Canta is a hospitality entrepreneur, developer, and visionary leader whose career has been defined by innovation, resilience, and a commitment to creating meaningful places that bring people together. With more than 25 years of experience in hospitality development, real estate, and mixed-use projects throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe, she has built a reputation for transforming complex opportunities into successful and enduring developments.

Born with an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for hospitality, Aileen began her career in Los Angeles, where she gained invaluable experience working on landmark adaptive reuse and hotel development projects. Early in her career, she was entrusted with leading a challenging redevelopment effort in Beverly Hills that required navigating government agencies, historic preservation requirements, and community stakeholders. The experience became a defining moment in her professional journey, teaching her the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and purpose-driven leadership.

Throughout her career, Aileen has been involved in the development and repositioning of boutique hotels, luxury resorts, select-service properties, multifamily communities, and mixed-use developments. Her expertise spans acquisitions, underwriting, development, construction management, strategic partnerships, capital structuring, and asset repositioning, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality industry from concept to completion.

Today, she is the Founder and CEO of University Hotels & Club™, an innovative hospitality platform that reimagines the relationship between hotels, universities, healthcare institutions, and local communities. Her vision centers on creating hospitality destinations that combine luxury accommodations, wellness-focused private clubs, branded residences, lifelong learning, and community engagement while allowing educational and medical institutions to participate as ownership partners. The concept has attracted attention throughout the hospitality and investment communities for its unique and forward-thinking approach.

Beyond her professional achievements, Aileen is deeply committed to personal growth, wellness, and family. She believes that true leadership begins with alignment of mind, body, and spirit, and she incorporates wellness, fitness, reading, travel, tennis, opera, and the performing arts into her daily life. Her philosophy is rooted in integrity, gratitude, faith, and the belief that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.

One of her greatest sources of pride is her daughter, Brittany Carlyle Wells, a graduate of the Collins College of Hospitality Management at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Brittany shares her mother's passion for hospitality and service, and together they represent the next generation of leadership and innovation within the industry.

Now based in New York City, Aileen continues to champion transformative hospitality projects while serving as a voice for innovation, collaboration, and women's leadership. Through her work, she hopes to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs to pursue bold ideas, embrace challenges, and lead with both vision and purpose.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Aileen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, self-belief, and an unwavering commitment to growth. Throughout my career, I have learned that success is not defined by the absence of challenges, but by the willingness to keep moving forward despite them. I never give up on a goal I believe in, and I approach every opportunity with determination, curiosity, and the confidence that anything worthwhile is achievable through hard work and persistence.

One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is that mistakes and failures are not the same. Mistakes are opportunities to learn, while failures only occur when we stop trying. Early in my career, I was given an opportunity that changed the trajectory of my life when a mentor placed hotel development plans on my desk and said, “We'll learn together.” I embraced that challenge wholeheartedly, often working seven days a week, and it taught me the importance of taking initiative and believing in my own capabilities.

I also believe that lasting success begins from within. Maintaining a strong foundation—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually—has been essential to my journey. I start each day with gratitude, remain grounded in my faith, and focus my energy on people, opportunities, and environments that align with my vision and values. Over time, I've learned that not everyone will understand your path, and that's okay. What matters is staying true to your purpose, continuing to evolve, and trusting the process.

Today, one of the most rewarding indicators of success is seeing the impact of my work extend beyond the rooms I occupy. When people recognize, discuss, and support the vision I have spent years building—even when I'm not present—it reinforces that perseverance, integrity, and consistency truly create lasting influence.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received was simple: "Never stop learning, and never let anyone define your limitations."

Early in my career, I was given an opportunity far beyond my experience level when a mentor handed me hotel development plans and said, “We’ll learn together.” That moment taught me that growth often comes before confidence. You do not have to know everything to begin; you simply need the willingness to learn, adapt, and work harder than anyone else in the room.

Throughout my journey, I have learned that successful careers are built through perseverance, curiosity, and resilience. Challenges, setbacks, and unexpected obstacles are inevitable, but they should never become excuses to stop moving forward. Every obstacle contains a lesson, and every lesson becomes part of the foundation for future success.

I also learned the importance of trusting my instincts and remaining authentic to my vision. There will always be people who doubt your ideas or question your path, especially when you are creating something new. The key is to stay focused on your purpose, surround yourself with people who elevate and support your growth, and never allow temporary setbacks to distract you from long-term goals.

Most importantly, I have learned that opportunities are rarely handed to you fully formed. You have to be willing to step forward, take calculated risks, and create your own opportunities. The combination of preparation, persistence, and belief in yourself can open doors that others may not even see.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the hospitality, real estate, and development industries is to know your worth and never underestimate the value you bring to the table. Early in your career, there may be moments when you are the only woman in the room or when others question your experience, ideas, or capabilities. Do not let that diminish your confidence. Your perspective matters, and your voice deserves to be heard.

Be willing to work hard, ask questions, and learn every aspect of the business. Some of the greatest opportunities in my career came from stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing challenges before I felt completely ready. Don't wait for permission to grow—take initiative, stay curious, and continuously invest in your knowledge and skills.

I also encourage young women to seek mentors, but equally important, become your own advocate. No one will champion your career more passionately than you will. Build strong relationships, maintain your integrity, and let your work ethic speak for itself. Reputation is one of the most valuable assets you will ever have.

Most importantly, be resilient. There will be setbacks, disappointments, and people who doubt your vision. Do not allow those moments to define you. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, evolve, and become stronger. Stay focused on your goals, trust your instincts, and have the courage to create your own path rather than following someone else's.

The industry needs more women leaders, innovators, and visionaries. Believe in yourself, stay true to your purpose, and never be afraid to take a seat at the table—or create your own.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in hospitality today is the evolution of purpose-driven destinations that integrate education, healthcare, wellness, and community engagement. This is the foundation of University Hotels & Club™, a concept I developed that brings universities and hospitals into the ownership structure rather than simply operating near them. By aligning hospitality with institutions that have long-term missions and deep community roots, we create a model that is both resilient and sustainable.

The industry has increasingly recognized the potential of this approach. At major hospitality and university conferences, the concept has been highlighted as an innovative model that addresses changing traveler expectations, evolving wellness trends, and the growing demand for meaningful experiences. Guests today want more than accommodations—they seek connection, learning, wellness, and a sense of belonging.

What is particularly exciting is that the concept is now attracting interest beyond traditional hospitality. Luxury multifamily developers have approached us about transforming underutilized common areas and amenity spaces into health and wellness clubs operated under the University Hotels & Club™ platform. This demonstrates the growing demand for wellness-centered environments and validates the broader applicability of the model across multiple real estate sectors.

At the same time, one of the greatest challenges is that transformative ideas often require patience and persistence. Working with universities, healthcare systems, and public institutions involves long planning horizons, multiple stakeholders, and complex decision-making processes. Innovation rarely follows a straight path, and introducing a new model requires educating partners, building trust, and maintaining conviction in the vision.

For me, the opportunity outweighs the challenge. I believe the future of hospitality lies in creating places that serve a greater purpose, generate lasting economic value, and positively impact the communities they are designed to support.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life are integrity, gratitude, resilience, and respect for others. Integrity is the foundation of everything I do. I believe that trust is earned through consistent actions, transparency, and treating people with fairness and respect. I have always believed in treating others the way I would want to be treated, regardless of circumstance.

I also place great importance on surrounding myself with positive energy and maintaining a healthy mindset. Over the years, I have learned that success is not only about achievements but also about the quality of the relationships we build and the energy we bring into the world. I choose to focus on growth, solutions, and opportunities rather than negativity or resentment.

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is the importance of grace and forgiveness. Every person we encounter contributes in some way to our journey, and I believe there is strength in acknowledging that, even when paths diverge. Letting go of past disappointments creates space for new opportunities and personal growth.

I am also deeply committed to wellness and balance. I believe that true success comes from nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. Practicing gratitude each day, maintaining a strong sense of faith, and investing in personal well-being help keep me grounded and focused on my purpose. These values have sustained me through challenges and continue to shape the way I lead, build businesses, and engage with others.
