Her Story

About Ailene

Ailene Huang has built a meaningful career in higher education by combining a passion for student development with a deep commitment to service and personal growth. Her professional journey has followed a non-traditional path, beginning with community college before dedicating a year of service at the National Baha'i Center in Sydney, Australia. That experience strengthened her administrative, leadership, and community-building skills while shaping a philosophy centered on service and purposeful work. Upon returning, she completed her undergraduate studies and went on to coordinate youth development initiatives at the Ruhe Institute, where she worked with junior youth, middle school students, and mentors to foster learning, leadership, and community engagement.

Building on more than a decade of experience supporting students, Ailene has established herself as a thoughtful higher education professional dedicated to helping individuals navigate important academic and career transitions. She completed her Master of Education in Educational Counseling at the USC Rossier School of Education during the pandemic and has since held advising roles that focus on student success, career exploration, and mentorship. Currently serving as a Career Specialist in Healthcare at Mount Saint Mary's University, she advises undergraduate students pursuing health professions and STEM-related pathways, while cultivating partnerships with employers, faculty, alumni, and healthcare organizations to expand experiential learning opportunities.

Throughout her career, Ailene has remained committed to empowering students to discover purpose and meaning in their educational and professional journeys. She approaches advising through active listening, thoughtful reflection, and meaningful dialogue, encouraging students to embrace uncertainty as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Guided by the belief that education is ultimately a form of service to others, she strives to create environments where students develop resilience, discernment, and the confidence to build careers that are aligned with both their personal values and their desire to make a positive impact on their communities.

Ten minutes with Ailene

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, continuous learning, authenticity, and the willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Throughout my career, I've learned that success is not achieved alone—it is built through meaningful relationships, collaboration, and the support of mentors, colleagues, family, and friends who have encouraged me along the way. I've always believed in staying true to my values, maintaining a strong work ethic, and being open to new ideas and perspectives. Every challenge has taught me something valuable, and every experience has helped shape my leadership style. Remaining adaptable, committed to lifelong learning, and focused on making a positive impact has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Believe in your abilities, trust your instincts, and don't wait until you feel completely ready to pursue new opportunities. Growth often happens outside of your comfort zone, and some of the most rewarding experiences come from taking calculated risks. Stay curious, continue learning, and seek out mentors who will challenge and inspire you. Don't let setbacks discourage you—they are often the experiences that build resilience, confidence, and wisdom. Be authentic, remain adaptable, and never underestimate the value of building strong relationships and supporting those around you. Most importantly, define success by your own values and purpose rather than by someone else's expectations.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The greatest opportunities today lie in embracing innovation, adapting to change, and continually developing new skills. Technology and digital transformation are creating possibilities across every industry, making lifelong learning more important than ever. There is also tremendous opportunity in building meaningful professional networks, sharing your expertise, mentoring future leaders, and collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Organizations increasingly recognize the value of inclusive leadership and diverse perspectives, creating new pathways for women to lead, influence decision-making, and drive meaningful change. By remaining open to new ideas, investing in personal growth, and lifting others along the way, individuals can expand both their influence and their impact.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values I hold most important are integrity, authenticity, empathy, professionalism, collaboration, and empowering others. I believe trust is earned through honesty, consistency, and accountability, and those principles guide every decision I make. Whether in my career or personal life, I strive to treat people with respect, listen with empathy, and create an environment where others feel valued and supported. I also believe in giving back by mentoring others, sharing knowledge, and encouraging people to recognize their own potential. Success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others to grow and succeed as well.
