Her Story
About Aishwarya
I am a highly specialized Civil and Structural Engineer with a unique dual academic foundation, holding a Master’s in Structural Engineering and currently completing a second Master’s in Civil Engineering with a focus on Construction at Purdue University. Throughout my career, I have intentionally built a highly diversified technical portfolio across the civil, renewable energy, oil and gas and building sectors. As a design engineer and 3D modeler, I have engineered complex steel and concrete industrial infrastructures, pioneered niche product development for solar power plants, and managed residential and commercial workflows as a Project Coordinator and design engineer. Currently, I am expanding my structural expertise into Bridge engineering at AtkinsRéalis, focusing on complex bridge structures.
Beyond my technical design capabilities, I bring a rare, 360-degree understanding of engineering business operations. Early in my career, I have been trusted with responsibilities that extended far beyond core engineering, immersing me in fabrication oversight, accounting, corporate finance, and sales. This early exposure to the holistic mechanisms of how a company runs has shaped me into a highly strategic project leader. Passionate about paying this mentorship forward, I have served for the last two terms as an Industrial Reviewer for Engineers Without Borders (EWB). Evaluating student technical reports and providing critical feedback has been a transformative experience, defining my professional evolution from a dedicated technical learner into an impactful industry mentor.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being purpose-driven. Life experiences helped me discover my purpose and develop resilience. I understood that am passionate about solving real problems and building meaningful relationships with like-minded people because I believe success is achieved through collaboration.
I also recognize that success comes with challenges, setbacks, and occasional losses. I always feel the urge to be prepared to strategize my goals. My approach is to stay focused on my long-term goals, learn from mistakes, adapt when necessary, and remain prepared for obstacles. This combination of purpose, resilience, continuous learning, and strong relationships has been the foundation of my success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've learned is that it's okay to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them. In many cases, not taking action because you're afraid something might go wrong is worse than making a mistake itself.
I've also learned the importance of clear communication and the difference between being polite and being assertive. You can be respectful while still standing up for your ideas, setting boundaries, and asking for what you deserve.
Another important lesson is to value your work. Don't underestimate your skills or give away your time and expertise for free. When you create value, it's important to recognize that value yourself.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just ask lots of questions, don't follow the procedure, and don't hold yourself back, because many of the barriers we actually perceive often look so much bigger in our minds than they actually are in reality. Just believe in your abilities, take your time, and don't be afraid to take any challenges. Civil engineering has been a male-dominated field traditionally, but now the landscape is changing. Many companies are actively supporting women through mentorship programs and their own communities, which actually help women grow in their careers. Most importantly, just don't let anyone else define what you can achieve, because I come from a very rural background with no or minimal support. If I can achieve, anyone can, so nothing should stop you, whether it's your background, where you're coming from, or the fact that you are a woman should never limit your ambitions, because this particular industry definitely needs diverse perspectives and women's contribution would make a real impact.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in Civil engineering is balancing safety, sustainability, cost, and project timelines. Engineers are expected to design structures not only that are safe and resilient but also meeting budget constraints and increasingly ambitious environmental goals. Adapting to new technologies, evolving design codes, and the growing impact of climate change also requires continuous learning throughout our career.
On the other hand Civil engineers are the professionals who create tangible impacts on people's lives through the infrastructure they design and build. , However, their contributions often go unnoticed by the public. They receive little recognition unless a problem arises. Balancing technical challenges, safety requirements, environmental concerns, budget constraints, and public expectations makes civil engineering a demanding profession. But, this lack of visibility is one of the key challenges faced by the civil engineering profession.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Curiosity, ownership and gratitude.
Curiosity drives me to keep asking questions, explore deeper, and the “why” behind everything. Ownership, on the other hand, gives that curiosity direction and purpose.
Professionally, curiosity helps me grow technically and adapt to new challenges, whereas ownership ensures that I don’t just identify problems but actively work to solve them with accountability. In personal life as well, curiosity keeps me open-minded and learning from different perspectives, and continuously grow rather than becoming stagnant.
Gratitude keeps me grounded. I try to remember my roots and acknowledge that I am not where I am alone, but many people, directly or indirectly, have supported my journey. Being grateful helps me stay positive, focused on progress rather than comparison, and be more appreciative of life.
