Her Story
About Akilah
I am from Delaware, born and raised. I attended a technical high school with an athletic healthcare career area that sparked my interest in athletic training and physical therapy. I went to Alvernia University, a small D3 school in Reading, Pennsylvania, for their 3+2 program, earning my bachelor's in healthcare science and master's in athletic training in 2024 while also being an athlete. My professors and preceptors were amazing and influential. I am now back in school at Moravian University in Bethlehem, PA for my doctorate in athletic training because I want to have a big impact on the field, especially as a woman in a male-dominated industry.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Akilah
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to all the people who helped me along the way, like my professors, coaches, mom, and best friend, who wouldn't let me quit when I had doubts. They pushed me to study and keep going, reminding me that nobody knows everything but you know what you do know.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice is to know what you know and know what you don't know, because you're never going to know everything and nothing ever looks the same. Also, nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission, which means walking into every room with your head held high.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Go for it, it's the most fun thing in the world. Don't let anything stop you. There are hurdles and barriers but you belong here. Keep going, it's a hard journey but if you know what you want and really want it, you will achieve anything.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is people understanding the role and value of an athletic trainer, as many think we just tape ankles or hand out band-aids, but we do injury evaluations, referrals, rehab, and provide emotional support. The biggest opportunity is the versatility and range of fields we can work in, like performing arts, industrial settings, or private practices - we are like chameleons.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Loyalty, determination, ambition, and humility are most important. You have to connect with people, recognize everyone is human and makes mistakes, and remember our journey is our journey. We're here to do something, not just lollygag.
