Her Story
About Alayne
I've been in the golf industry for about 16 to 17 years, and my main focus has always been in golf operations. I started as an assistant professional for a number of years, and then I was the lead professional at Austin Country Club for 4 years. I've been in my current role as General Manager for just about a year now. In this role, I'm managing the country club from the food and beverage operations to events, marketing, accounting, golf operations, agronomy, and ground maintenance - all of it. Usually I'm handling anything to do with budgets or balance sheets, monitoring the budgets, helping manage the restaurant, helping manage the golf operations, and overseeing the agronomy side of stuff, so how they're growing the grass out there. One of my most notable achievements was being voted the Assistant Golf Professional of the Year for the Southern Texas Section in 2023. I'm a member of the PGA of America, and I have a huge network of golf professionals that I can rely on for advice, that have helped me advance in my career, and that continue to be good sounding boards when I have problems.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to just being at the right place at the right time, and always continuing my education and trying to learn something, and being open to new opportunities and new challenges.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to build your network. It's been the most influential in my career, and I have a huge network of golf professionals that I can rely on for advice, that have helped me advance in my career, and that continue to be good sounding boards when I have problems. It's been very beneficial to expand my network.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice would be to remain professional and to not forget why you got into this industry. We all love golf, and it's important not to lose sight and get caught up in the day-to-day business operations, but to remember that we are in an industry of golf, and we have to get out and play. It's important to get out with your staff and your members.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think some of the biggest challenges are outside influence from large third-party companies when it comes to retail for golf operations, and then the economy. It's always tough when you're talking about a member-owned club, because it is a bit of a luxury item for some people. But one of the also biggest opportunities is golf and expanding the next generation of golfers. It's a huge opportunity, and it's something we've been very successful with at most places I've been at.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being genuine in my actions and my service level is most important to me. I'm in the service industry, we're a member-owned country club, and being genuine in how I interact with members and staff is my biggest value - being genuine.
