About Alba

Alba Cruz serves as community manager at Open Health New York, a nonprofit dedicated to opening locations across all five boroughs of New York City. She first connected with the organization as a volunteer, dedicating seven years to the cause before transitioning to staff. During her time as a volunteer, she progressed from regular shifts to managing entire districts. Alba joined the staff when the volunteer manager position became available and held that role for four years until her promotion to community manager in April. In her current position, she oversees volunteer coordination for a database of approximately 1,400 volunteers, produces events such as boat tours and talks, manages outreach and partnerships with other nonprofits, handles social media and newsletter communications for thousands of subscribers, and coordinates logistics for the organization's annual citywide festival. Prior to her nonprofit career, Alba gained experience in production and logistics through large-scale events and festivals, including work with Neuron Blanc, Billboard Hot 100 concerts, and Electra Zoo. She emphasizes collaboration in the nonprofit sector and draws on her background managing large groups to support passionate and diverse New Yorkers.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to ask. Don't be ashamed to ask. The worst they can say is no. A successful person is a person that they didn't give up. No doesn't mean necessarily a no in business. No means not right now. Or perhaps not that way. In nonprofit, it's about collaboration, so don't be afraid to ask, how can we collaborate? Take your time when you speak and be comfortable in silence, especially when there's a group of men in the room.
