Her Interview

Ten minutes with Alexa

01What do you attribute your success to?

Never giving up on the dream to work in publishing

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Doing something you love and go for it

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Publishing is very competitive - I didn't realize that until I got into the field. Everyone would love to work with books, so if you're interested in literature, working with books is such a dream, which makes it a very competitive industry. My advice would be to do whatever it takes to not let that deter you from following that dream. Any competitive industry is competitive for a reason - it's because it's worth it, because the work is amazing and exciting and fulfilling. Breaking into the publishing field is daunting, but it's absolutely worth it, so do whatever it takes to not let that dream go. If that's something that you want to do and something you know you'll be good at, just keep pushing and keep advocating for yourself to break into that field, because you will eventually, no matter what that looks like for you. Maybe you start working for a magazine, maybe you start out working for something adjacent to book publishing, and that's totally okay, because you will get there, and it will be worth it. Doors will open.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I love books, reading and writing
