About Alexandra
Alexandra Escobar has built a career in public health since 2016, with expertise in epidemiology, postpartum mental health, and border health. After attending Mira Costa Community College and earning a BA in biological anthropology from the University of California, San Diego, she gained experience in COVID-19 vaccine rollout before completing dual degrees: an MPH in Epidemiology and an MA in Latin American Studies. Her research includes a randomized control trial following 100 moms through their migration journey to evaluate postpartum depression and anxiety, resulting in her being the first author on a peer-reviewed article. Escobar values integrity and perseverance in her work and personal life, and she credits her success as a mother to her drive to show her daughters that family responsibilities do not have to come before pursuing one's dreams. She advises that if no one offers a seat at the table, one should build the table, and encourages young women entering the field to never doubt their capabilities, noting that dedication beats talent.

01What do you attribute your success to?
Being a mom is what pushes me every day. I want my daughters to know that I didn't sacrifice my dreams to be a mom. I want them to look up to me and see that anything is possible, and that there's no amount of family responsibility that ever comes before being a woman and having your own dreams.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
If no one will offer you a seat at the table, build the table.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never doubt how capable you are, just because you're going into a field that might seem generic, like public health or any social science field. Dedication beats talent every time. The people that get up and respond to emails quickly and keep the momentum going are building success.
