Her Story

About Alexandra

Alexandra Milan serves as a Brownfield Redevelopment Manager in Newark, New Jersey. With eight years in her field, including one year in her current role and six to seven years focused on contaminated sites, she works on technical assistance grants for communities with vacant or contaminated properties. Milan connects communities with resources, provides plain language information on site contamination and redevelopment, and offers economic justifications for brownfields programming. Her background in economics and environmental economics, honed through coursework on climate projections and statistical skills, led her to her first role under a United States Environmental Protection contract tracking taxes and business revenue on cleaned-up sites. She has contributed to large-scale economic analyses, including quantifying climate change impacts on children born in 2024, and participates in workshops and listening sessions emphasizing environmental justice and social equity. Outside her professional work, Milan is active in her synagogue community, where she volunteers as a cantorial soloist, helps lead services, and engages in music programming. She also supports her women's group with membership and treasury duties and participates in the Cold Odi choir, assisting with events and music. Milan speaks Spanish, which she grew up with, along with other languages acquired from living abroad in Japan, and she has professional experience involving Puerto Rico. She is currently pursuing goals such as releasing an album project and expanding her liturgical capacities for Jewish music.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You have to have confidence in yourself, and the work you're putting in, the passion you're putting in, and sometimes bulldoze through those challenges. Never be afraid to keep moving, to keep going on to the next step. I'm fairly young, and I've gone I've worked in a lot of different places, and with a lot of different people, because I recognized when it was time for me to move up. And I was never shy to provide my opinions and feedback.
