Her Story
About Alexi
Alexi Houten serves as Director of Health Information Management at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. She began her career in early 2019 after graduating, starting with an internship that led to roles in coding and project management. She then worked as an informaticist, which involved project management responsibilities, before becoming an HIM manager. In that role, she managed every area of the department by covering for others and taking on additional responsibilities to learn and grow. Last year, she applied for and was appointed Director of Health Information Management. Alexi is a member of AHIMA, where she sits on one of the boards, allowing her to network with professionals nationwide. She attributes her success to the values instilled by her mother, who raised her as a single parent and demonstrated strength in a male-dominated field. Alexi advises young women entering the industry to say yes to projects, get their foot in the door, and prioritize networking both internally and through groups like AHIMA. She emphasizes respect for patients, coworkers, and oneself, along with recognition and her faith as core values in her work and personal life.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Alexi
01What do you attribute your success to?
I definitely think it was the way I was raised. My mom raised me on her own since I was [AGE] and a half, and she was very career-oriented in a male-dominated field. She taught me to always have your voice heard, to always show up, and that your voice is important, and to never be afraid. She's the strongest woman that I know.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
For me what helped me grow so much is just saying yes to different projects. Say yes even if you just want to listen in. It's about getting your foot in the door too. Networking is so big, not only internally but with groups like AHIMA.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect is really big. We want to give the most respect to patients, coworkers and yourself. Do everything with respect. I'm also big on recognition. I empower my teams to give each other recognition. My faith too, everything I've learned in church brings in my core values to work.
