Ten minutes with Alexia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success first and foremost to my faith in God. My faith has been my foundation through every season of life, providing me with strength, wisdom, and perseverance during both challenges and triumphs. It has taught me to trust God's timing, remain humble in success, and serve others with compassion and integrity. As a former foster youth, I have experienced firsthand that our circumstances do not define our future. My faith has given me hope, purpose, and the resilience to overcome obstacles while remaining committed to helping others do the same. I am also grateful for the unwavering support of my husband, family, mentors, and community, who have encouraged me to continue growing personally and professionally. Together, these influences have reinforced my belief that true success is not measured by personal achievements alone, but by the positive impact we make in the lives of others and our willingness to faithfully answer the calling placed before us.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is, "You are the author of your own story, and you cannot save everyone." Those words have stayed with me throughout my personal and professional journey. As a social worker, it's easy to carry the weight of others' struggles, but this advice reminds me that while I can offer compassion, guidance, and support, I cannot live someone else's journey for them. My role is to empower people, not rescue them. The reminder that I am the author of my own story has also encouraged me to make intentional decisions that align with my values, purpose, and faith. It has given me the courage to embrace new opportunities, set healthy boundaries, and recognize that growth often comes from trusting God's plan rather than trying to control every outcome. Ultimately, this advice has helped me become a more effective professional, a healthier individual, and a more authentic leader.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the behavioral health field is to take care of your own mental health first. You cannot effectively pour into others if your own cup is empty. Prioritize self-care, seek support when you need it, and never view asking for help as a sign of weakness. Don't be afraid to take risks or step outside of your comfort zone. Some of the greatest opportunities for growth come from embracing uncertainty and trusting yourself, even when the path ahead isn't completely clear. Every experience—whether it feels like a success or a setback—will shape you into a stronger professional and leader.

Most importantly, trust in God and the purpose He has placed on your life. There will be challenging seasons, but your faith can provide strength, direction, and perspective when you need it most. Surround yourself with mentors, colleagues, family, and friends who will encourage you, challenge you, and remind you of your worth. Success is not about having all the answers—it's about remaining grounded in your values, continuing to learn, and serving others with compassion and integrity.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges facing the behavioral health field is workforce retention. High turnover among mental health professionals contributes to burnout, disrupts continuity of care, and limits access to services for individuals and families who need support. Investing in clinician well-being, mentorship, and sustainable workplace cultures is essential to retaining a strong workforce. Another challenge is navigating changes in government legislation and public policy. Funding, reimbursement, licensure requirements, and mental health initiatives continue to evolve, requiring organizations and clinicians to remain informed and adaptable. These changes also present opportunities to advocate for policies that expand access to quality mental health care. Additionally, there is growing concern that some organizations prioritize productivity and financial outcomes over the quality of care provided.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my work and personal life are faith, family, integrity, and service. I believe in putting God first, followed by my family, because they provide the foundation that allows me to serve others with purpose and compassion. Maintaining a healthy quality of life is also essential to me. I believe you cannot pour from an empty cup, so prioritizing self-care and personal well-being enables me to be fully present for those who depend on me. Honesty and open communication are values I strive to practice. I believe trust is built through transparency, accountability, and treating others with respect, even during difficult conversations. Professionally, I am committed to always putting the client's best interests first. Ethical, client-centered care should guide every decision, even when there are competing priorities or external pressures. I believe our responsibility is to advocate for those we serve while upholding the highest standards of compassion, integrity, and professionalism. These values shape not only the work I do but also the person I strive to be each day.
