Alexis Banks
Alexis Banks is a Federal Data Management Specialist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she supports data-driven decision-making and advances responsible practices in data analytics and information management. Known for her strategic mindset and technical precision, she plays a vital role in overseeing data initiatives that inform environmental policy and operational effectiveness. With experience spanning analytics, oversight, and technical project management within secure federal environments, Alexis brings both rigor and adaptability to complex, high-impact work. Her path into data analytics and AI began unexpectedly during her undergraduate years at Howard University, where she studied mathematics and economics while competing as a Division I soccer defender. On the eve of graduation, a conversation with her mother sparked her interest in data analytics well before it became a defined discipline. She quickly immersed herself in the field through independent study and went on to serve with AmeriCorps at Georgetown University as a STEM Afterschool Program Director, where she applied her emerging analytics skills while exploring graduate-level coursework. Alexis later earned her Master of Science in Data Analytics from American University’s Kogod School of Business while working full-time at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Her time at Homeland Security stands out as a defining achievement, where she rapidly advanced early in her career. She credits her experience as a soccer defender for shaping her professional approach focused on protection, support, and ensuring team success qualities that aligned closely with her role in safeguarding critical operations. Alexis continued her federal service with the EPA, where she has spent several years contributing to data and technology initiatives at the intersection of AI, robotics, and automation. Often one of the youngest professionals in the room, she embraces the opportunity to represent and advocate for greater diversity in the field, particularly as a woman of color in a space where representation remains limited. In addition to her government work, she is the founder of Beautiful Geeks LLC, a tech consulting company dedicated to sharing knowledge and empowering others in data and technology. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Data Science, Alexis remains committed to advancing innovation, mentorship, and inclusive excellence within the evolving landscape of data and artificial intelligence.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my community, my family, and just knowledge across the board. When I was little, everyone always said, like, you're ahead of your time, what you want to do isn't even a thing yet. I wanted to do engineering, I wanted to do law, I wanted to do so many things while I was playing soccer for D1 Howard University. My mom offered the idea of data analytics the day before graduation, and I said, that's exactly what I want to do. I really applaud Homeland Security for the way they've molded me. The AmeriCorps experience was extremely exciting, as well at Georgetown. For all the kids I mentor, from my little people in high school to people that are older than me, I always tell them, like, why not? You know? We know what you're capable of right now, because you've done that, right? But why not try something else? I would tell little me, you know, just keep going.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is that someone else’s limitations do not define my own. Just because something has not been done by others or because someone else was unable to achieve it does not mean it is beyond my reach. I have carried this mindset throughout my career, using it as motivation to pursue opportunities with confidence, challenge perceived boundaries, and remain focused on my own growth and potential rather than external expectations.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In my work, public service and helping the American people feel secure has always been my prerogative. My biggest thing is representation being a woman of color in this field is very small, so just trying to make sure I stay focused. I approach things from a defender's mindset - I'm not aggressive or money hungry, I like what we have, I want to defend what we have, I'm always the person right behind someone else to make sure we're good. When it comes to AI governance, I think about how it impacts the world and how it helps people, not just the theoretical or gaming perspective. In my personal life, I love reading books, going for walks and hikes, swimming, scuba diving, horseback riding, windsurfing, and surfing. I also love mentoring and tutoring, especially second and fourth graders, and I coach soccer for 5 to 7 year old. I love cross stitch and I'm really versatile. I like anything that catches my eye. I have a need for speed and I'm always trying new things.
