Her Story

About Alexis

Alexis Bennington is an Engineering Technology student at DeVry University based in Dublin, Ohio, where she maintains a strong academic record while building hands-on skills in programming, information systems, and digital systems design. Her passion for engineering began in high school through a career academy STEM program focused on mechanical and civil engineering, where she first discovered her interest in problem-solving and technical design. She is now preparing to transition fully into the engineering field as she continues her studies and enters early-stage professional opportunities.

Alongside her academic pursuits, Alexis brings nearly a decade of experience in early childhood education, currently serving as a Lead Preschool Teacher. In this role, she designs and delivers developmentally appropriate learning activities while fostering social, emotional, and cognitive growth in young children. This experience has strengthened her patience, adaptability, leadership, and communication skills—qualities she now carries into her engineering journey.

Alexis is actively working toward a future in design and engineering roles, including opportunities in electrical, mechanical, and software engineering. She is passionate about hands-on experience, continuous learning, and applying her technical education in real-world environments. As she makes this transition, she is eager to connect with professionals in the field, gain practical experience, and grow into a career centered on innovation and impact.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Alexis

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to believing in myself and never thinking little of myself. I always tell myself 'I can do that' and 'I can keep going.' If I have a vision for myself, I know I can do the things to get there. Even when I faced obstacles like self-doubt and discouragement, and got turned down a handful of times, I kept chasing my dreams and maintaining that vision. I never gave up on what I wanted to achieve, even when I felt like maybe I'd never get out of preschool or should have just gotten a degree in early childhood instead. I just kept pushing through and believing that I had it in me to do what I wanted to do and be what I wanted to be.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've received is to just believe in yourself and don't think little of yourself. Always think 'I can do that, I can keep going.' If I have a vision for myself, I can do the things to get there. This advice really helped me push through the challenges and obstacles I faced.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say just shoot for the stars and never belittle yourself. I know a lot of times women going into engineering second-guess themselves. You get put in a room with a lot of men, and it can be intimidating. So just believe in yourself, shoot for the stars, and know that you have it in you to do what you want to do and be what you want to be. Don't let anyone make you think you're any less than them, because a lot of those old-school cultural beliefs can still reflect in today's work life.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Having a good balance between career and family is really important to me. Family is a big part of my life and I'm always with family, so being able to balance a good family life and a good work environment is a real accomplishment for me. In fact, going back to school and becoming an engineer is part of my goals to start a family, because this world is getting very pricey and I want to be able to achieve those family goals.
