About Alexis

Alexis Johnson serves as Director of Strategy at Henning, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Anchorage, Alaska. With 6 years of experience in the field, she focuses on homeless services and direct support for the adult homelessness population. Johnson previously worked for the municipality of Anchorage as the housing and homeless coordinator, a role to which she was appointed by the mayor following her work on related projects. After leaving that position, she transitioned to the nonprofit sector, where her organization is now contracted by the municipality to deliver direct services. She oversees operations including two low-income housing facilities and a homeless shelter, while also managing grant writing, identifying federal, state, and local funding opportunities, and building partnerships with private organizations and community groups. Johnson earned her master's degree from Gonzaga. She attributes her professional success to her faith in God and dedication to hard work. Among the values she holds most important is authenticity, believing that one should remain the same person regardless of the setting or the individuals encountered. Johnson advises always networking, taking meetings, and saying yes to people, and she recommends that young women entering the field never be the smartest person in the room.
