Her Story

About Alexis

Alexis Winkler is a public relations professional specializing in consumer entertainment. She began her education at Middlesex College before transferring to Kean University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and discovered her passion for PR. She also studied abroad in Australia, gaining a broader perspective on the industry and hands-on experience developing communications campaigns. Today, Alexis is passionate about building a career around work she genuinely loves and using her voice to advocate for women in an industry where they make up the majority of the workforce but remain underrepresented in leadership. She believes women should feel empowered to take up space, advocate for themselves and create opportunities for the next generation.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Alexis

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to staying curious, being willing to put myself out there and never being afraid to ask questions. Early in my career, I learned that there is always something new to learn from the people around you, regardless of their title or level of experience. I have also tried to say yes to opportunities, even when they felt a little outside my comfort zone. Some of the biggest moments in my career have come from taking a chance, making a connection or simply shooting my shot.

Most importantly, I genuinely love what I do. PR can be fast-paced and demanding, but when you are passionate about the work, the long days feel worthwhile. That passion has kept me motivated to continue growing, learning and taking on new challenges.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Always look for opportunities, say yes to them and put yourself in rooms with people who will help you grow. Never stop asking questions, and never be afraid to put yourself out there. Sometimes that means shooting your shot, even if it means reaching out to a CEO, asking for the opportunity or starting a conversation that feels intimidating. You never know where one conversation can lead.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Know your value and don't be afraid to take up space. Your perspective is valuable, and you deserve to have a seat at the table. PR is a field with a strong representation of women, but that doesn't always translate to equal representation in leadership or ownership. Young women entering the industry should know their worth, advocate for themselves, and negotiate for what they deserve.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in PR right now is the ability to think beyond traditional media relations. The industry has evolved significantly, and PR sits at the intersection of media, creators, social, influencers, partnerships and culture. One of the challenges, whether in-house or at an agency, is ensuring that PR is valued as a strategic business function and that the people leading that work are given the resources, recognition and compensation that reflect its impact.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Curiosity, passion, authenticity and perseverance are some of the values that matter most to me. I want to stay curious and continue learning, whether that means asking questions, trying something new or learning from someone else's experience. I also believe strongly in doing work that genuinely matters to you.

PR can be a demanding, always-on industry, so I feel fortunate that I am passionate about what I do. As cliche as it is, if you love what you do, you won't have to work a day in your life.
