Her Story

About AlexisChanel

I'm a domestic abuse survivor who has dedicated the last 2 years to advocating for other women. I guide women out of abusive situations and provide them with emotional and spiritual support after they've left. I also work to find different grants and resources to help other foundations in my city. My professional background is in accounting - I went to school for criminal justice with a minor in accounting because I wanted to pursue forensic accounting, but I stepped away from the criminal side and went straight to accounting, so I do everyday oil field accounting. I got my degree in 2021. On a typical day, I get the kids ready for school, then go to the courthouse to meet a woman who needs my help at a mutual safe spot. I advocate for them and try to get them the housing they need through the city or shelter, whatever they need. After that, it's picking up the kids, baseball practice, band practice, cooking dinner, and church on Sunday. I recently published my book, and I've been on different news stations and in newspapers, continually using my voice to navigate for women in my city. My goal every day is to see who I can save or how I can help change somebody's life. I'm not a self-seeking person - I'm all about helping the next person. I'm always the last person I worry about.

Ten minutes with AlexisChanel

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God first and my children second, for sure. When asked what I attribute my success to, I had never been asked that before, but those are the two things that drive everything I do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received was from my professor my senior year in high school: Don't be afraid to ask the question, because that one question can unlock your whole future. The answer to that question can unlock your whole future. I've carried that with me throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my field would be to walk by faith, not by sight. Simply because, we walk by faith, we don't walk in fear. So, that would be my advice - to walk by faith, not by sight. Don't let fear overcome what could be.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I face on an everyday basis is working with women who are wanting to leave abusive situations, but they're afraid. It is definitely hard and emotionally draining, because I've been through it, so I understand. Normally, I may get a few that are ready 100% because the situation got too bad, or sometimes I may be on my third attempt, and maybe by the fourth attempt, I finally get them. My biggest opportunity is just to save a life. That's my goal every day when I wake up - to see who I can save, or how I can help change somebody's life. I'm not a self-seeking person. I'm all about helping the next person. I'm always the last person I worry about.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My most important values are loyalty and honesty. I've lived my life based off honesty, and I live off loyalty, because if you're not loyal to your own passion, it's hard to be loyal to the next person. These values guide everything I do in both my work and personal life.
