Alice Baldwin-Jones, Ph.D., is an applied anthropologist, educator, and activist with a career dedicated to research, teaching, and social justice. She has taught a wide range of anthropology courses to diverse student populations—including adult learners, veterans, traditional students, and medical students—across community colleges, universities, and online platforms. Her academic focus spans medical anthropology, urban anthropology, and cultural studies, with research interests in food insecurity, health disparities, and K–23 diversity initiatives, as well as the African Diaspora in the Caribbean, Central America, the United States, and indigenous populations in Mexico.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. Baldwin-Jones is deeply committed to activism and community service. She has served as a Trustee and School Committee member with the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race, as an adjunct organizer and delegate with the Professional Staff Congress at CUNY, and volunteers with OrigamiUSA, where she teaches classes in the art of origami. Her professional contributions bridge the worlds of scholarship and civic engagement, reflecting her belief in applying anthropological knowledge to real-world issues.

Over her extensive career, Alice has been recognized for her dedication to pedagogy and student success. She brings a wealth of experience, empathy, and insight to her teaching, drawing on her background as an immigrant and her ability to connect with students from all walks of life. Whether through curriculum development, mentorship, or research, Dr. Baldwin-Jones consistently emphasizes equity, inclusivity, and the transformative power of education.

I would advise young women entering the industry to believe in yourself and your capabilities—you are more prepared and capable than you may realize.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is that being a woman of color and older can sometimes make you feel invisible, which is why being confident and assertive is both a challenge and a powerful opportunity.

Authenticity is the most important value to me in both my work and personal life—it guides how I show up, connect with others, and make decisions.
