Her Story

About Alice

Alice Benjamin, widely known as “Nurse Alice” and recognized as America’s Favorite Nurse, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, NBC medical correspondent, national health advocate, speaker, podcast host, and founder of Nurse Approved, a nurse news and education company based in Los Angeles, California. She has dedicated her career to making healthcare more accessible, understandable, and human-centered. Beginning her healthcare journey in 1997, Alice progressed from bedside nursing roles to advanced practice, leadership, education, and national media, while maintaining her commitment to patient advocacy and empowering communities through reliable health information.

With a career spanning healthcare and media, Alice entered the media space in 2009, combining her clinical expertise with journalism and storytelling to bridge the gap between medicine and the public. She serves as a medical correspondent for NBC, where she translates complex medical topics into clear, engaging conversations for audiences. As the founder and CEO of Nurse Approved, she created a trusted nurse news and education platform focused on healthcare policy, clinical advancements, nursing issues, wellness, and professional development. Under her leadership, Nurse Approved became the first organization to launch a national Nurses Week Special, highlighting the voices, challenges, and contributions of nurses across the country. She also leads MediaRX, a healthcare media production company that helps healthcare professionals communicate their expertise effectively through modern media platforms.

Alice’s professional background combines advanced clinical training, healthcare education, and media expertise. She completed her Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, earned her Clinical Nurse Specialist credential from Point Loma Nazarene University, and completed journalism training through New York University and UCLA Extension. Beyond her professional work, Alice is passionate about fitness, healthy living, and community education. She serves as an ambassador for the AARP Healthy Living Series through Nurse Alice and supports the mission of the American Heart Association through health advocacy and education initiatives. Guided by values of integrity, transparency, optimism, and meaningful impact, Alice continues to inspire healthcare professionals and the public by reminding people that informed conversations can transform lives.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Alice

01What do you attribute your success to?

Following my passion and being authentic and true to myself. I chose to follow my passions even when leaving a high-profile position at Cedars-Sinai, and in the first 5 months I did more television than in the previous 5 years.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Go where you are appreciated, not tolerated. A senior colleague told me she saw my ideas and energy but the organization would hold me back, encouraging me to leave and grow elsewhere.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to remain persistent and resilient. Do not allow setbacks or rejection to define your path. Remember that a “no” does not always mean the end—it may simply mean “not yet.” Continue pursuing your goals, advocate for yourself, and stay committed to your vision, because persistence and determination can open doors that may initially seem closed.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Healthcare providers aren't always given platforms in media to amplify messages. Opportunity for healthcare professionals to create their own platforms and collaborate better with other industries rather than waiting to be asked or expecting others to come to them due to privilege.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Impact, integrity, transparency, and optimism. I want to see people succeed and surround myself with team members who share positive energy rather than negative talk.
