Her Story

About Alicia

Alicia Johnson is a clinical social worker and therapist based in Batesville, Mississippi. She has been practicing therapy for five years and has been in the social work field since 2017. Alicia earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Mississippi in 2017 and her Master of Social Work from Louisiana State University in 2019. As a clinical social worker with LSW credentials, she has completed training in EMDR, trauma-based care, and play therapy. Her therapeutic approach is person-centered and eclectic, incorporating internal family systems and family systems theories, with a strong emphasis on trauma-informed work. Alicia chose her career path to help break the stigma surrounding therapy in the African American community by providing representation and reducing fear of judgment. Prior to her current role, she worked with adults with intellectual disabilities for nearly five years. She attributes her success to her support system of family and her clinical supervisor, and she values genuine human connection, integrity, and accountability in her work.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Alicia

01What do you attribute your success to?

My support system. My parents and loved ones have always encouraged me and been supportive... They never let me give up... my clinical supervisor, she was... one of the best things that have happened to me in the field.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Stay curious. My clinical supervisor... ask questions in a way to make you think, and she was very, very much an advocate for continuing to learn, and not just the CEUs... just be curious about everything.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Imposter syndrome isn't real... ask questions. Be supportive of others, and ask for support.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

People's limited view of the field... people underestimate what we can bring to the table as a social worker, and how valuable a social worker can be... it limits the accessibility to certain things when people misunderstand your field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Human connection, like genuine human connection. Integrity. And accountability. Those would be my top 3.
