Her Story
About Alicia
Alicia McCormick is a higher education professional, educator, foster parent, and advocate dedicated to supporting children, families, and individuals with diverse needs. She has built her professional career at Biola University, where she currently serves as Director of Graduate Program for the Health Division SSTH. Previously, she worked as Manager of Accreditation and Licensure and Administrative Coordinator, developing extensive experience in academic administration, program management, accreditation, and licensure. Alicia earned a PhD in Educational Studies from Biola University, along with a Master of Arts in Christian Studies with an emphasis in Christian Leadership from Grand Canyon University. Beyond higher education, Alicia is deeply committed to foster care and family advocacy. Through her work as an Emergency Shelter Home provider, she cares for infants and young children during periods of transition, often serving as a source of stability while children await reunification, placement with relatives, or another permanent family. Through her writing on eshmomlife.com, she shares thoughtful perspectives on the realities of fostering, including mental health, attachment, community support, court processes, and the emotional challenges of caring for children without always seeing the long-term results of her efforts. Her professional and personal work reflects a strong commitment to compassion, advocacy, faith, and creating supportive communities for vulnerable children and families. Through education, foster care, writing, and community service, Alicia continues to champion the importance of showing up for others and providing meaningful support during some of life's most challenging transitions.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Alicia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the support I’ve received from my family, friends, social workers, and support groups. Knowing I’m not alone has given me the strength to keep moving forward.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to never be afraid to ask for help. I’ve learned to use support groups, connect with others, ask questions, and seek guidance from social workers when needed.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don’t let fear stop you. There’s never a perfect time to start fostering. Whether you’re single or have a spouse, find your village, ask for support, and take that first step.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is navigating investigations related to medical neglect. At the same time, the opportunities are endless because there is such a great need for more foster homes and supportive families.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are loving God and loving people. I believe we can do hard things, help each other, celebrate both big and small moments, and always be willing to repair, grow, and try again.
