Ten minutes with Alisa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to faith, resilience, continuous learning, and a commitment to serving others. As a woman of color, a leader, a caregiver, and a lifelong learner, I have learned that growth often comes through challenges, perseverance, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when the path is not easy.

I have also been blessed to build a life at the intersection of leadership and creativity. As both a corporate professional and a creative leader, I understand the value of balancing strategy with imagination, discipline with inspiration, and performance with purpose. Living in both worlds has strengthened my ability to connect with people, solve problems, communicate across diverse audiences, and lead with authenticity.

Throughout my journey, I have remained committed to learning, growing, and helping others do the same. I believe lasting success is not measured solely by personal achievement, but by the positive impact we make in the lives of others and the opportunities we create for those who follow.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of career advice I ever received came from my mentor, Shaun Hopkins. He taught me that if I wanted to be the best, I could never stop learning.

As a learning and development professional, he challenged me to look beyond the praise and pay attention to the opportunities for growth. He often reminded me that even if I received one hundred positive evaluations, there was still value in carefully examining the one that was less favorable. Not because criticism should define us, but because growth requires humility, reflection, and a willingness to improve.

What made this advice so powerful was his belief that excellence should never be measured against a limited standard. He encouraged me to think beyond my immediate role, my organization, or even my country. If I wanted to be the best, I needed to learn from the best. Not just from other learning professionals, but from marketers, customer service professionals, communicators, leaders, and experts across industries and around the world.

That lesson continues to shape my career today. No matter how much experience I gain or what recognition I receive, I remain committed to staying curious, remaining teachable, and continuously improving. I believe the most successful leaders are those who never stop learning.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I’ll be honest it took me a while to realize that I didn’t have to choose.

For years, I felt like I was supposed to be one thing or another. A training and development professional or a creative. An educator or an artist. A strategist or a worship leader.

What I’ve learned is that my greatest strength was never found in choosing between those parts of myself. It was found in embracing all of them.

My creativity makes me a better leader. My experience in learning and development provides structure, discipline, and focus to my creative pursuits. My work as an author, recording artist, worship leader, educator, and executive are not competing identities—they are complementary ones.

Each role strengthens the others.

Success isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming more fully yourself and allowing every part of your experience, talent, and perspective to work together in service of your purpose.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in leadership development today is helping people navigate constant change while maintaining confidence, clarity, and connection. The pace of technology, shifting workplace expectations, and evolving business models require leaders to learn and adapt faster than ever before. At the same time, many individuals are seeking greater authenticity, purpose, and balance in their personal and professional lives.

One of the greatest opportunities is that learning has never been more accessible. We have unprecedented access to knowledge, tools, and resources that can help people develop new skills, expand their perspectives, and accelerate their growth. The challenge is no longer access to information—it is helping people transform information into action.

I believe the future belongs to leaders who can combine competence with connection, strategy with empathy, and innovation with authenticity. Organizations that invest in developing people—not just processes—will be best positioned to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in my professional life are faith, authenticity, service, growth, and excellence.

Faith provides the foundation for how I lead, make decisions, and navigate challenges. Authenticity reminds me that I do my best work when I lead from a place of genuine purpose rather than trying to fit someone else’s expectations.

I also believe deeply in serving others. Whether I am developing leaders, designing learning experiences, speaking, coaching, or serving in ministry, my goal is to create opportunities that help people grow and succeed.

Growth is another core value that guides my work. I believe learning should never stop, and I am committed to continuously developing myself while helping others expand their knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Finally, I value excellence. Not perfection, but a commitment to giving my best, honoring my responsibilities, and creating meaningful results. When faith, authenticity, service, growth, and excellence work together, they create the foundation for both professional success and lasting impact.
