What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell her to absolutely go for it, just to start. That's the best thing you can do. It can be a daunting career path to choose, and as a young woman, we are the minority in this industry, but there's a huge need for it, especially with baby boomers and older advisors looking to exit their practices, and there's going to be a huge shortage of financial advisors. I think women place ourselves as a really good, empathetic advisor, and we're very detail-oriented, so those are all great skills to have. I would encourage her to not be afraid of the challenge that it's going to be to enter it, but that she's very much needed in the industry.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the initial challenges that I have faced and I think am overcoming is that being newer to the industry and being younger, sometimes even being a female, there can be preconceived notions that clients have as to what your experience and knowledge level is. So it's about relationship building with them, being vigilant, and showing I understand where they're coming from and how to address their problems. I think that also comes from just experience and designation and building your knowledge base as well, and I've seen that transition for the better. Another area that we're seeing is with our younger clientele getting their information from social media, so we have a lot of questions about things that they see on there, about whether they should be doing this or not be doing this, or if they even need an advisor, what's the benefit to having an advisor. So it's about placing yourself as an expert in the industry and showing that we're a live person who can provide personalized guidance on all these different decisions, because financial planning, personal financial planning is personal.
