Her Story
About Alisha
My journey into payroll began unexpectedly when I started my career in human resources at a construction company where I was given the opportunity to learn payroll for two smaller companies within an organization. What began as additional responsibility quickly became my passion - I absolutely love payroll. I discovered that payroll is the perfect combination of analytical thinking, problem solving, compliance, and people. What I love most about payroll is the responsibility that comes with it. Payroll is one of the few functions that impacts every employee in the organization, and behind every paycheck is a person, a family, and a level of trust that cannot be taken lightly. I focus on auditing processes, ensuring compliance, identifying opportunities for improvement and creating processes that help organizations operate more efficiently. As my expertise grew over my 15-16 years in the field, I took a leap of faith and launched my own payroll consulting company called CoreCom Strategic Solutions. Starting my business allowed me to help organizations improve payroll operations, implement best practices, navigate compliance challenges, and maximize the value of their payroll and HR technology systems. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career because it gave me the opportunity to share my knowledge and help businesses operate more efficiently. While I enjoyed the entrepreneurship, it also reaffirmed something important about myself - I love leading teams, developing employees, and making an impact within an organization. This realization led me back into corporate leadership, and ultimately to my current role as payroll manager at Core Laboratories. My goal is to continue growing as a payroll and people leader while making a greater strategic impact within the organization. I want to continue building high-performing teams and mentoring future leaders in the payroll profession, helping to modernize payroll operations and strengthen payroll functions across organizations.

Ten minutes with Alisha
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say it's perseverance and thinking outside of the box. I was a single mom with no child support, and I got into payroll, and it was just my level of thinking and knowing that I deserve opportunities to grow within the organization and to show people my leadership skills and everything that I can do. I didn't have to be complacent and stuck at one place - I knew I could elevate and go further. So I think it was my perseverance and my mindset that led me to where I am today in my career.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to never underestimate the power of saying yes to opportunities that challenge you. I didn't start my career planning to work in payroll - I was working in human resources when someone gave me the opportunity to learn payroll for two small companies, and that one opportunity changed the trajectory of my career. You want to be willing to learn, ask questions, and step outside of your comfort zone. The greatest opportunities in life come from stepping out of your comfort zone and learning different responsibilities you weren't expecting to come your way. I would encourage young professionals to focus on continuous growth rather than immediate success. Learn as much as you can, seek out mentors, and understand that every experience, whether positive or challenging, is helping prepare you for your next opportunity.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, accountability, resilience, and compassion are my core values. I believe in leading by example, treating people with respect, and continuously growing both personally and professionally. These values guide everything I do in my work and in my personal life.
