Her Story

About Allison

I've been in the mortgage industry for about a year and a half as an account executive. Before that, I was in sales for technology where I had to learn all the ins and outs of the product. Then I got married and took off 12 years to be a stay-at-home mom. When I decided to come back to the corporate world, I wasn't sure how I was going to handle going back to an office, but I realized that in this industry, there's just so much to know that I needed to immerse myself in it in an office to excel as quickly as I wanted to. My husband is in the industry, so he was kind of my base knowledge when I first got into the industry. I've been at my current role for just over close to 2 months, and already I've been able to take on a semi-leadership role. My VP let me run a meeting when he was out of town, and my team comes to me for advice. My VP has noticed that when he's not available, I'm the backup. I'm working hard to try to move up into management as quickly as possible as we have a lot of new teams coming on board soon. My husband works from home so he can be home with the kiddos, and luckily we were able to switch roles.

01What do you attribute your success to?

My husband is in the industry, so he was kind of my base knowledge when I first got into the industry, so I was able to kind of learn from him. It is kind of a man's world, so you have to really have tough skin, but people like talking to women, and smart women, women that know the business, and so I think it's been interesting to be in a man's world, but really kind of excel as quickly as I have. I keep my head down, and I focus, and I work hard, and I'm always trying to learn new stuff, and learn more about the industry, and keep up on current events, and I think that's helped me to have more to offer people and be more conversational.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I've been told not to be so hard on myself and to be confident in my actions. I feel like I want perfection, and maybe that doesn't happen right away, and so I don't want to get frustrated and be down on myself. I try to keep a positive attitude, and always look at the positive aspects of whatever I'm facing versus any kind of negative things that might pop into my brain.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say it's very important to be a positive and a strong role model for children, especially daughters, and I think that when you can balance work and life, personal life, it shows your character. Sometimes it can be hard because you do have to say goodbye to your kids every day, but at the same time, when you come home and you've had a hard day at work, or a long day at work, and you get to come home to those little faces, then it makes it all worth it. You're doing it for them, you're doing it for your personal growth as well. I think it's important that you, as a mom, don't lose yourself in motherhood. You are your own person. That was one thing that I also had to overcome - I didn't know who I was after 12 years of being at home as a professional. Look at the big picture and realize that hard work really does help develop your character and your family.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being in sales, I think it's a challenge when you get those no's. You're supposed to take 99 no's for the one yes, and that can be a beating. It's very challenging to stay positive and to stay focused when you get those days where people just keep slamming the door in your face. But it's definitely rewarding when you do get those good calls, and you do make those good connections, and you start to build the relationship and now you have a friendly voice on the other line versus people slamming the door on you. Opportunities are to continue to try to build relationships. We're developing more, we're gonna have like 12 or 15 more teams come on board in the next couple years, and so I'm really working hard to be the right hand to my VP so I can hopefully have a team one day and lead a team.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say honesty, hard work and dedication, and professionalism, but I think having a fun time is also very important. Having a lot of laughter throughout the day is good for keeping your soul happy and keeping your positive attitude going. At home, in my personal life, I try to always have a positive outlook on everything. I try to make people smile and laugh. I think obviously honesty and love - loving your friends, loving your family - I think those are very important to have as well.
