Her Story
About Allison
My journey into environmental planning started in high school when I took an AP Environmental Science class. I was really struck by how science typically has the solutions to environmental problems, but because of policy, we either can't implement those solutions, or because of planning and implementation, they're not being done correctly. That spark led me to create my own interdisciplinary undergraduate degree because I really wanted to work at the intersection of environmental policy, planning, conservation, and government to fill those gaps and solve those issues. I've had wonderful mentors at every stage of my career, including that AP Environmental Science teacher who I'm still friends with and see about once a month. Throughout my 5 years in the field, I've worked with local governments and at the state level on statewide long-range planning. I'm now transitioning to the private industry with the Balmoral Group, which is exactly what I've always wanted to do - working in the private industry while also working with governments and bridging the gap with planning and policy.

Ten minutes with Allison
01What do you attribute your success to?
I'm a very driven person, and I think part of it goes into that curiosity. I always want to be doing something and feeling productive. I always want to do more, be achieving more, and raising the bar. I'm competing with myself - I want to be better than yesterday. But I think my why, if I boiled it down, is at the end of the day, if we don't have clean water, food, sustainable systems, and infrastructure, nothing else is going to matter. If I can do my part to help ensure those things happen, and maybe leave the world a little bit of a better place than how I found it, then I think that I've achieved what I set out to do.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to really try and keep your passion for it, remember why you wanted to get into this in the first place, and even though careers may twist and turn, as long as you keep that passion, you'll be led back to exactly where you need to be. Keep pursuing knowledge and always trying to learn what's out there and what's new. Just really keep your sights on why you wanted to do it in the first place. You can learn something from everyone and every situation, even if you think at first it's a negative situation. Being curious - like, why did that happen, or what can I take from that - is something that, as I've gotten further in my career, has really helped me gain something from every experience.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I think integrity is really important. I value honesty and loyalty, and I think, in general, I'm really about curiosity. I like being around curious people, I like staying curious. That keeps conversations and relationships open and non-judgmental, so I think curiosity and integrity are probably the most important ones. It also helps because you can learn something from everyone and every situation, even if you think at first it's a negative situation. Being curious - like, why did that happen, or what can I take from that - has really helped me gain something from every experience.
