Her Story

About Alrye

I retired as an assistant principal from a school in New York City in October 2022 after over 30 years in education, where I progressed from teacher's assistant to teacher, lead teacher, mentor teacher, and ultimately assistant principal. After retiring, I launched Rise Up Empowerment Coaching with a soft launch in November 2022. Initially, I wanted to coach retired women, but I discovered they weren't interested in setting more goals or that type of planning. I found myself drawn to younger women in their late 30s through 50s who were drawn to me and wanted to pursue dreams they had left on the shelf to raise families or pursue careers. In Spring 2023, I launched my first live event called Spring Into Your Vision, where I helped women use the SMART goals formula to set realistic and attainable goals. Over the past four years, I've been hosting live events focused on goal-setting, making pivots, and helping women finish strong. In December, I held an event called You're a Big Deal where women reviewed where they were getting lost in their own lives by putting their families first and themselves last. This led to a six-week group coaching session where one woman completed and published her first book on Amazon, another is now photographing her nephew's graduation, and another is completing hours to become a certified social worker. I recently held my first masterclass on March 4th with about 11 women, focusing on taking dreams off the shelf and becoming the woman they need to be to achieve their dreams. My coaching is faith-based, and I incorporate the Word of God as I encourage and coach women.

Ten minutes with Alrye

01What do you attribute your success to?

I actually had really great coaches along the way. I had no idea of what I was doing when I first started, and I got two really good coaches who helped me through the business. Even now, I still have a coach, so I do think you need support. Getting support from others in the way of coaching was very helpful to me. Praying and believing that God is going to guide me has been essential. And not giving up - even when you have to step aside for a moment, don't give up unless you're just deciding it's over with. Sometimes you have to cry, and that's okay. You cry, give yourself a few minutes to cry, then you shake it off, and you get up, and you start doing the things that you really intended to do, and make a plan. You do need to make a plan.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's never too early to start making your plans. I know we go to college and we don't know what our major's gonna be, but I think it's never too early to start SMART goals so that you have a definite framework or roadmap to follow, versus blowing in the wind and not being sure. Even if you change it, that's fine, but at least you have something that you can refer to and say, oh, you know, I am on track. It's just like to-do lists - sometimes I leave the list off to the side for a couple of days, and I come back to it, and I'm like, oh, I did this, I did this, I did that. Setting personal SMART goals allows you to track yourself, where you know these are some things that I would like to do, and this is how I'm going to get it done. It's a good way to keep track of yourself, even while you're hanging out with friends and living your young life. It's something good to show your parents - look, Ma, look, Dad, I do have a plan.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My faith is very important to me. Operating with integrity and honesty is essential. I'm not gonna tell you I can coach you in something I can't - if you tell me you're trying to be a startup business, I can't coach you in that, but if you want some personal development growth, alright, I can help you with that. Being honest about my own limitations within the business is important to me. I would say faith and honesty are my main values.
