Her Story
About Alyssa
I'm an implementations consultant at January, a debt collections company in the fintech space. We work with banks, credit unions, regulator services, and other financial institutions. What I do is support new client onboarding - I sit at that intersection between operations, data, and product, and support their process implementation by translating their business needs and bottlenecks into our internal systems and workflows to make sure they have a seamless onboarding process. My role covers the full client lifecycle: discovery, technical configuration, integrations, and ongoing relationship management. I'm constantly balancing execution with cross-functional coordination with product, engineering, and compliance. I work in a heavily regulated industry, so it requires a lot of thinking about downstream impact - not just doing the technical work, but also making sure that all of those compliance considerations are in place into every workflow build. In short, I translate the client's language into our language and find a way to automate and optimize their processes.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say it's determination. It's just taking the leap no matter what, doing it with fear. I think if I've gotten to this point, it's because I've been determined to get to this point. So I think determination is so important - not just 'I want to do this,' but 'I'm going to do this.' That's key to getting to where you want to be. I would say that's what I attribute my success to, just being extremely determined and doing what it takes, being really overzealous with my goals and what I know I can achieve.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell them that the right time is when you make it. Getting into this field requires determination. Us women tell ourselves a lot that we can't get into certain spaces, or that it's harder for us to get into certain spaces, and I actually think that the experience is what you make of it. It requires assertiveness, but it's definitely possible to be successful in this space. It's never too late to do it, either. We all have a career goal that we want to get to, but we never fully know how or if it's even possible. But I think that the first step is starting. There is a lot of room for women in this field to make a change.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I think that one of the main values is, of course, respect - respect for your colleagues, but also respect for yourself. Honesty and passion are important too. I think passion is a big one. Even on those days where I'm not feeling my best, I think the passion for what I do and being grateful is a huge one - being grateful for the opportunities I've had, but also being grateful to myself for showing up and doing it. I think those are values that I live by every day, because sometimes it just gets really hard to be in your best behavior every single day. But when you keep that at the forefront - being grateful of your opportunities, grateful of who you are, grateful of where you've gotten yourself to as a woman - I think those things definitely serve as motivation to get through those hard days.
