Her Story

About Alyssa

I've been in private equity for about three and a half years, and I was in fund administration prior to that. At TPG, I am a member of the investor relations team handling the legacy private equity fund strategy. I handle LP-led secondary sales, investor onboarding, and really any kind of ad hoc requests that investors might have when they've already been admitted into a TPG fund. My journey into finance began in 2016 when I was an undergraduate at Hofstra University. I originally thought I wanted to go into political science and maybe securities law, but it didn't really click for me. I had taken an Introduction to Finance course and became very interested in finance at that point. I actually did some research and independent study regarding private equity, and in 2017, I set my goal to get into private equity and break in by any means necessary. I was able to achieve that in 2022. My boss Dustin, who is the head of TPG Investor Relations, has been a really great mentor to me. While I do report to him directly, he's really mentored me along the way and helped me learn and grow, and just be able to hold my own in conversation, take the lead on projects, and really develop some more well-rounded skills that I didn't really have coming into the firm.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I personally attribute my success to just a need to always be asking questions and to always be linking with ways to improve and optimize. I think it's very natural in my mindset to always be seeking ways to find greater efficiencies, or new opportunities, or just a better way of doing something that you've always done. It's a blessing and a curse, you know? Like, I feel like I hold myself to a very high standard, and sometimes that can be a little much, but I've always been trying to stay in beta mode, know that I'm never gonna know everything that I could, and just find ways to continuously improve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Someone once said to me, if you don't believe in yourself, then why should anyone else? And that really struck a chord with me back when I was really trying to figure out if I really was good enough to move from the fund admin world and the client service part of that, and move into a buy-side role with TPG, because I really had a lot of imposter syndrome at the time. I still do, depending on the conversation.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think part of the advice I would give is that any woman in private equity, no matter the experience or the role, really needs to learn very quickly how to stand their ground and hold their own in conversation and not be brushed aside for being a woman, or for being maybe more junior on top of being a woman. You need to kind of own your presence and own your own skill sets. You have to have confidence in the industry, because how can you best advocate for the clients if you don't know how to advocate for yourself first?

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In my personal life, I'm very passionate about animal welfare. I run a non-profit here in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. I'm not the founder of the group, but I've been on the team for a little over 4 years now. I help to operate a foster-based dog rescue here in Dallas-Fort Worth. We pull dogs primarily from shelters throughout the Metroplex, and we seek to find their loving forever homes after they've received appropriate veterinary care or any needed training. And that really is my passion project, which has actually crossed over into my professional life as well, because I've hosted some events for TPG's benefit. I'm also very passionate about ecology.
